Yoni is 11 weeks old and I was just wondering, when is a good time to have him neutered? I heard that it is best to neuter them as soon as possible so they stay "puppy-like" and don't get aggressive. Is this true?

6 months is the general time frame when it comes to neutering, however it differs for everyone. Some prefer to wait until their males are fully matured, some like to get puppies over 3lbs before being put under, etc. I think 6-8 months is a good time. If a dog is beginning to mark alot, then do it asap to break the habit as quickly as possible. Jackson had only lifted his leg one time on my dads screenedin porch furniture at 6 months old and a month later he was neutered!

Never marked indoors ever since. Neutering CAN calm them down but it shouldn't change their personality at all. Jackson was almost 7 months when neutered and he is still at 1.5yrs old his same goofy self.

You should talk with your vet. I think around 6 - 7 months is the usual time frame but it will not keep them "puppy like". It reduces the urge to mate and can help prevent cancer in both the males and females.

Neutering sooner rather than later helps reduce bad behaviors like marking, and if a dog is neutered they are less likey to be aggressive. They have little to no drive to fight over a bitch in heat. I prefer to wait until 8-10 months old (my boy was done at 12 months) to allow for the baby teeth to fall out. That way, any retained teeth can be pulled at the same time your pup is under for his neuter, and they can also be microchipped at the same time. One thing I recently learned from a knowledgeable YT breeder is to wait until their growth plates close. Ask your vet and they can help you with determining when the growth plates close.

8-9 months....let them develop and let those growth plates close up. That is my professional opinion, and I am sticking to it! I would not worry about Marking, I am not convinced that a Yorkie is ever 100% house broken...why even today Maxine...well, you know.

I waited for my Mastiff to be 15 months before I had him fixed, but they are slow to develop.

Bailey was neutered around 6 months. Bailey never marked.

Id say around 6 months however with my little lad I didnt have much choice as he was a rehome and got him done a week after I had him at 12 months, my little girl was spayed at 6 months

Yeah, but marking is a lot different than a dog having accidents, IMO. You do *not* want to deal with a male lifting his leg on everything, ALL the time. Jackson will have a poop accident probably once every 2 months or so (usually on really rainy nasty days) but I couldn't imagine dealing with cleaning up pee all the time. I believe it's totally possible for a Yorkie to be almost 100%.

I don't believe any dog is truly 100% housebroken, even the dogs who are fully housebroken are bound to get a bout of sickness one day, whether it be poop or throw up in the house, etc. I dogsit 2 Boxers who could hold it for 24hrs most of the time if needed, but the one had major diarrhea the other day and went in the house. I would call Jackson 99% potty trained. I would never deal with a dog that was having accidents daily (that wasn't a pup, of course). The dog would be crated and put on a strict regiment schedule.

My Buzz is 11 months old today, and he's not neutured, and he is sooooo not aggressive...He doesn't mark in the house, and he doesn't hump anything, so I'm in no rush...I have started calling him Karate Kid, because when he pees (outside), he hikes his little leg so high, he looks like Jaden Smith in Karate Kid lol...Sometimes, on a walk, he gets so excited, he hikes so high, and so fast, he tumps over lol...I have a spayed female, and he holds his own w/her (now she's aggressive!), but he doesn't instigate anything...Butttt, he does want all the bones, all the toys, all of everything, and doesn't want his sister to have anything lol...
