| Neutering with an undescended testicle Hello! I have a 23 week old Yorkie that is getting neutered tomorrow. I took him for the physical exam yesterday and the vet could only feel one of his testicles. She explained to me that the other one was in his abdomen so the surgery would require two incisions. I'm so emotional about all this. I honestly was having my doubts about having him neutered at all because I worry so much about him. He is 3.9 pounds. At the vet, they told me that isn't a problem and that he'll be fine but I still can't help worrying. Then when I found out it'd be a little more complicated due to the undescended testicle I panicked even more. What do you guys think, I should go forward with the surgery? I trust this vet very much because I went to high school with her so I feel a little more calm that she'll be doing the surgery. I considered waiting but I was told that he'd start marking and that it's best to do it by 6 months. I just want to know others opinions who have more experience. This is my first puppy ever and I absolutely adore him and just want him to be fine. I don't want to put him in any danger but everyone tells me neutering is the best thing and I was also told that the undescended testicle could later on become cancerous. Please give me your opinions. Do you think the recovery will be long? Anyone whose puppy had same surgery? I feel so helpless having to leave him, he's so attached to me. I have to drop him off at 8am and pick him up around 5pm. Thank you for your help! Debbie |

| HI Debbie~ My Bogey had the same condition and he did fine with her neuter. I had both my boys done together and to tell you the truth I didn't see any difference between how Bogey and Doodlebug acted afterward. I was also told that his surgery would be more extensive but once the vet made his incision he was able to locate the undescended testes through just one incision. So you actually might get luck like we did. I also know that there are plenty of other members that had the same issue as your little guy and they did very well too.

| Thank you! Thank you for the replies, they've really helped me feel better I just dropped off my baby at the vet. The vet told me she'd be doing the surgery around 10 or 11am and she'll call me as soon as she's done. I should be able to pick him up by 5 or 6pm. I'm praying everything goes well and this whole ordeal is over with soon!!! I really appreciate your encouragement. |

| I hope everything goes great for your little one. I had a maltese with this condition and he was neutered with no problems. It might have been a little more expensive since they have to 'retrive' the other testicle . . but that was it. Good luck and I hope all goes well. |

| Your baby will be fine! Sending good thoughts your way for a speedy recovery! They neuter/spay pets so early now, I've seen kittens that are barely 8-12wks getting fixed - and they're barely 2lbs. |

| He's home with me! My baby is home now. I picked him up a couple hours ago. It really broke my heart to see him with that scar. The scars look so scary to me. They had to do two, at the end the undescended testicle was not in the abdomen but in the Inguinal tube (that may not be the correct name). The vet told me that the incision was bigger than she had wanted because it was so tiny and hidden that she had to cut through layers or some explanation like that. Right now it looks very purple/red, I can't even bear to look at it. But I'm so relieved he made it out of the surgery fine. He already ate some and just seems groggy, not himself but I know that'll change in a few days. How did the scars look on your babies after the neuter? I guess it's normal for it to look pretty bad but I want to have an idea how soon it'll look better. I feel so guilty with my baby, I love him so much. I really want to thank you guys for all your support and advice. |

| I feel your pain. My little Kobe also had an undescended testicle (cryptochid). The vet suggested waiting till he was 1 year old to see if it would come down, but it never did. My husband was totally against the surgery until he went to the vet and the vet explained to him that it could cause him to get cancer later on. We got Mia two years later, and he finally gave in and we had Kobe and Mia fixed on the same day. Of course, they explained that Kobe's surgery would be a complicated one because of the incision in the abdomen. I cried when I left them at the vet that morning. Picked them up along with their meds that evening, and Mia was kind of groggy and just slept all night. Kobe, on the other hand, was whining and crying. We were afraid to pick him up because of the scar. We looked and the poor guy had stitches on his penis too. The next day, Mia was as if nothing had happened but Kobe was not looking good. He didn't want to move and if he did, he screamed. This went on for two days and the third day, I had to take him back to the vet. He was somehow licking his wound even though he had that cone on and his stitches were now infected. He had to be put under and the stitches were redone, this time they put staples. Had to go back to the vet every day until finally after almost 6 days, he was 90 percent better. If I had to do this all over again, would I? No, I would not. It was too painful to see him suffering. Hope your baby doesn't have to go through what my baby did and has a speedy recovery.

| Forgot to mention. You could hardly see any scar at all.
