| Just started home cooking.. questions I have been debating whether or not to home cook for my baby but it seems right. I was talking with a friend and she gave me a recipe involving rice cereal and a few things. The dogs love it and the vet didn't see a problem with it. He did however suggest a multivitamin which I got. My question is, I started Bri on it today and she is 5 months old and 2.5lbs. I gave her 3 spoonfuls and she left some in the bowl. How much is a serving of wet vs. a serving of dry. Here is what we fed her.. 1/2 cup half and half 1/2 cup infant rice cereal 1 jar meat baby food |

| They need to eat more wet because it's about 75% moisture. That aside, this would be extremely dangerous to feed long-term. It is not balanced even with a multivitamin. There is really only one vitamin supplement made for homecooking (Balance IT). If that isn't used, then a combination of different vitamins and minerals will be necessary. An unbalanced diet can lead to blood, bone, and heart problems just to name a few. It is best to talk to a veterinary nutritionist and get a recipe from them. When dealing with a puppy and their needs, then a nutritionist is a necessity. It's a great thing to do if you have the time and energy, but things can go terribly wrong very quickly if it is not done right.

| OH, sorry I think you are confused or either I didn't explain. This isn't all she'll be getting, I'm just testing out wet food. I've already discussed this with my vet. He told me to see what works best for her as far as portions go and that is really why I asked my question. I still have a kibble, I am just slowly introducing something wet/homemade to see how she does. I am fully aware of the long term consequences regarding not getting enough nutrition, I have already got a few recipes. My vet suggested to try something bland to ease her into home cooked food. I have 2 real kids, and my yorkie is like one of them, therefore I'd never do something that I wasn't fully knowledgeable on. |

Calculating the claories in the recipe vs. the calories your pup needs may be a good way to see if pup is eating enough.

| Ok, thanks for all the advice. We don't have many pet shops around here and she doesn't seem to be doing well on Blue Buffalo. So, I'm going to try home cooking. Are there any good books you recommend? |
