Slightly Elevated BUN Level?

Rhianna goes in for her spay on the 13th. She had her pre-op blood work on the 2nd. The doctor called yesterday with the results and said that everything was within normal range except for a slight elevation in the kidney level. She didn't seem that concerned about it and said because the blood work was done without a fast it could of been she had eaten protein (which she did have broiled chicken over her food that morning) But,before her spay they will be running another blood test to see if fasting lowered the level.

Has this happened to anyone else? Even though she wasn't overly concerned about it, I'm a little freaked out.

Bun has to do with dehydration creatinine is the one you want to be most concerned with but i ALWAYS do 12 hr fast with blood work like i do for myself that way no food will interfere with the test so in future best to do this as well. I would not worry about it though as my demi had that as well and i was told by jean dodds who has studied blood work for 40 years that it is not of concern if slightly elevated and is due to the dog being dehydrated at the time of the blood draw. She never said anything about food though but demi had hers on a 12 hr fast and we had an hour consult before the blood was drawn and she is not a big water drinker.

Thank you for that info! You know, I should of asked before her appointment if they wanted her to fast . . .it didn't even dawn on me to do that. I know that she cannot eat after 8pm the night before her spay, so hopefully everything will go well and they'll be able to perform the procedure as I will be off next week for vacation.

Faith was spayed last Thursday and I had her bloodwork done prior to that. I didn't even think of fasting her, so her kidney level was also slightly elevated. My vet told me the exact same thing...that he wasn't concerned because she hadn't fasted. All went well with her spay and she also had 14 baby teeth pulled. Best wishes to you and your little one!

yeah she should be fine my demi had a dental after as well and she had a little protein in urine too and was fine. Did you take in a urine sample as well as urine is more indicative of kidney issues than blood work so i always do both before putting mine under to be safe

Thank you! That's good to know . . .I know I'm the one making it an issue as the doc is not concerned about it . . .I just can't help it . . . I'm just a worry wart.

She said the morning of her spay they would re-do the blood and then if it was still slightly elevated, they'd do a urine. I'm glad that they'll be doing that because I can just imagine me trying to catch her wee wee in a little cup.

it is easy you just first thing in am flip wee wee pad over have them pee on that then syringe into a sterile cup you can get syringe and cup from vets office or any pharmacy- i like that better then a needle in bladder

Ooooooo interesting!! I like that! Ok, so I will do that and bring it with me on Tuesday that way they'll have it if they need it. Wow, I must be just stupid or something . . I was thinking I'd have to hold a cup under her . . .

lol yeah i have learned alot in 6 years with dogs with issues lolll that is what is so great about this site too we can learn from each other
