| fish oil We had our yearly checkup for Bandit and Nala today and everything looks great Hooray. I was telling the vet that Nala had flaky dry skin and the vet suggested using fish oil. We bought some capsules and tried it today for the first time. Has anyone "cured" their pups dry skin this way? |

| I use the Ark Naturals Royal Coat Express and love it!! It not only has the fatty acids EPA & DHA from salmon oil, but it also has the fatty acids GLA & LA from borage oil which are very beneficial for skin. Also, when giving any salmon oil you must supplement with Vitamin E and this already has the Vit E in it. |

| Magnus had dry skin and my vet also suggested I give him fish oil. Said I could give him the ones I take. Just give him half a pill. I did that for several weeks but I think I saw improvement when I changed his food. He doesn't have dry skin anymore and I'm not giving him any fish oil so... *shrug* I think I read the salmon fish oil from Costco was pretty good. |

| Flaky Skin No More Arabella had the same problem and the vet suggested fish oil with vitamin E. Her skin problem is now a thing of the past, it took about three weeks for it to all go away. The only down side is the fishy kisses I receive on a daily basis. I am going to try the coconut oil and chips with her. I know one YT member massages the oil on the skin before giving her furbaby a bath. This just sounds like a nice Hawaiian vacation versus smelly fish.

| I have a thread started in the "for sale" section How much should I give? For the oil, the recommended dosage is 1 teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight, or 1 tablespoon per 30 pounds of body weight. Start slowly, for example, start at a quarter of this and build up slowly. Use similarly for cats and other animals. For the chips, you can give up to 1 tsp for a small dog, 2-3 tsp for medium dogs and 1 TBSP or more for large dogs. The chips are very high in fiber, so start small, and build up slowly. You can give both chips and oil everyday, twice a day, as a snack or with meals. CocoTherapy Organic Virgin Coconut Oil and Coconut Chips are 100% all natural, human-grade, and can be enjoyed by the whole family. Safe and delicious for human consumption, the coconut oil and chips can be used as a food supplement, in salads, as cooking oil, for baking or snacking right out of the bag.

| Hi! I give Tiger (5lbs) 1/4 tsp of Nordic Naturals Pet Cod Liver Oil. It seems to works, I sprinkle it on top of his food and he loves the taste. It's kind of expensive, I think the bottle was just under $30 but I wanted to make sure I gave him a good quality one. The bottle is pretty big so it will last a long time. Here is a little blurb from the products website: "Nordic Naturals Arctic Cod liver oil provides cats and dogs with an excellent source of all natural vitamins A and D, plus the important Omega-3 fatty acids, DHA and EPA. Omega-3 fatty acids support healthy skin and coat, joints, heart, brain, eyes, growth and reproduction. All natural vitamins A and D support vision, immune function and healthy bones. Nordic Naturals provides the highest quality fish oils available, exceeding the international standards" Last edited by Tiger2934; 03-31-2010 at 11:40 AM. |

YT 2000 Club Member | Ive been using the ark naturals for awhile now for mostly coat care and it works, Tucker's hair is so shiny and soft. My dad uses it for his itchy dog and he has seen improvements. I did take them off the fish oil for about a month to try the coconut therapy with my dogs and it really didnt help with what I wanted it to, (bad breath, eye staining) and it actually made my dogs look "greasy" so after them being on it a little over a month I put them back on the fish oil. I do still give them the coconut oil about 2 days a week because I know that it has great health benefits and the love it, but I like the fish oil better for my dogs as far has skin/coat goes. I use the coconut oil on me for just about everything and LOVE it. It has done wonders for my dry skin, hair, face.. you name it..lol ..

| Thanks so much for all the responses!! The vet gave us these made-for dog salmon-oil capsules that you just poke and squeeze over their food. I'm excited to see if this clears up Nala's dry skin!! |

| We use Nordic Naturals Pet Omega-3 Pet capsules. We give a 1 capsule per day (a higher dosage than the bottle states to give for our dog, consistent with our veterinary nutritionist's recommendations). We so far like the product. Here is a link. Nordic Naturals Pet Products
