| Microvascular Dysplasia My 15 month sweet little boy has had bile acids over 1300 and just had a cat scan and biopsy done to determine if there was a shunt present. Luckily there is no shunt, but the biopsy results came in and he does have microvascular dysplasia. He is currently on metronitonzale and lactolose and eats a perscription K/D diet. What should I do to help him, would different food or medicine be helpful. I have talked with others with yorkies with microvascular dysplasia who have bile acid counts between 75-100. My Timmys is so much higher and I am worried. If anyone could help me with information, I would GREATLY appreciate it! |

| There's a Yahoo group you can join where they have a lot of information and a protocol for LS and MVD dogs. Are you a member of that group? My Lucy has MVD too - but so far very mild with no symptoms. Her last test was 35 so much less than the numbers you have. 1300 sounds like a lot. Is your dog having any symptoms . . .or doing well on the protocol you have him on now? |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | That does seem high for MVD. My Cali has a very mild case, diagnosed by Bile acid tests and confirmed with a liver biopsy. Her BA were below 100. Are they going to redo his bile acid test after a few months on medicine and diet?

| I'm sorry to hear your baby has MVD. Our dog Daisy was diagnosed with MVD at age 6 -- our vet just did not know what was wrong with her all those years so you are lucky to find out early in your baby's life. Our Daisy went on the Hill's L/D diet initially, along with milk thistle (we use the product Marin). She is now on a home cooked diet formulated just for her as her situation is complicated by severe allergies and IBD. Daisy does great and is well managed medically. Lots of dogs with MVD do great on the right diet. I just wanted to also tell you that Daisy's BAT and overall liver functioning have IMPROVED consistently since her diagnosis. So it is possible! I wish you good luck!

| 1300? Are you sure that isn't one of the liver enzymes? If it's MVD, K/D is not recommended. L/D canned is preferred or Royal Canin LS 14 Hepatic kibble. SAMe (Denosyl or some use Vetri DMG) should be given. Milk thistle is also good (Hepato Support seems to be the favorite for severely liver compromised dogs). Some give vitamin e also. Any symptoms?

| The only symptoms he has currently is he shakes once in a while. the bile acids were 1300 which I thought was insane. He is doing ok on the K/D, he is on that because of the low protein. The medicine so far he is ok on...The biopsy said to be MVD, but I have never heard of anyones yorkie having bile acids over 100! |

| They have done several bile acid tests since september, he has been on the medicine since then and no change. The vet told me there would be no decrease! |

Purina EN is VERY high in protein! I have a poodle on that because she has inflamatory bowel disease. Is your yorkie doing ok on the EN. I wish I knew what I could do, I feel helpless not being able to help him!

| Are you going to an internist? I believe Actigall can bring the bile acids down, but they would no longer be measurable. The K/D is not recommended because there is pork in it which is hard on the liver. Vets tend to use it because they see the low protein and think it's a great choice, but low protein isn't all that is needed. They tpe of protein given is very important. Some types cause toxins to build up faster and that causes symptoms. SAMe is generally considered a very important part of liver shunt and MVD in severe cases...

His ALT levels are normal, they are 25...They said that they put a dye into his system to see the flow of his blood to see if it is shunting, which is what I thought a scintigraphy was, but they called it a cat scan. He acted almost drunk (standing still and wobbling, rocking back and forth) the day we started this, but now on the mediucine he shakes once in a while. I don't know if he has some hypergylcimea or if that is something associated with MVD.

| I just found out that his bile acids were 129, and it was his liver enzymes that were 1329. But his ALT level was 25, normal! |
