| dry food over a day old? I was reading a thread "to vet or not". I have a question. I free feed mine with dry food. If they don't eat it all I usually leave it out til they do. Does it go bad after one day?

| I wouldn't think so, the whole bag would go bad the day after you would open it if that was the case.

| I would think so. If mine don't eat what is in their bowl I empty it and always give them fresh. I also wash their bowls every night and give fresh water. I read somewhere that they can get a bacteria infection from day old food and dirty bowls. I am very careful with that especially since my Daisy has a very sensitive stomach.

| If you were wanting to know about the food and water bowls, yes I would clean them daily, but the food, I would keep. Just don't add fresh food to the old food.

| I agree with the bowl cleaning, I should have said that, but I thought she was talking just about the food. Having six, I don't usually have any food left in the bowl at the end of the day, so I guess maybe I should have said that!

| I leave a fresh bowl of food for my 2 girls and free feed as well . Never had any problems with the food going old or smelly . It is dry kibble, and the bag is also sealed in fresh . My 2 girls fininsh off a bowl of food every 2 days , and when the bowls get dirty I clean them out. The water bowls, they get 2 fresh bowls a day , and if their is any brown in the water dish that gets cleaned out fast ! my girls have bottled water to drink too. If it was canned food , I would clean the bowls out each time . That is the difference , or raw food . That Imo needs extra care and adjustment in their daily diets.

| I agree about the water. Mine get fresh water everyday, but sometimes it takes them a couple of days to eat the dry. They get can food in the morning.

| I just leave the dry food out all the time even if it's not finished within a day, which it never is. He gets wet food mixed with the dry every night though and then I clean the bowl of course.

| I always give fresh everyday (throwing away old if not finished) but I don't really free feed. I am trying to keep her on a schedule so it will be easier when we switch to outdoor potty training in the spring. Besides, she has such a sensitive tummy, I don't want to risk it. Always give fresh food morning and evening and always a clean bowl and fresh water in the morning downstairs and at night upstairs. Okay, so I am finatical

| I always leave kibble available since I free feed, and have never had a problem. I scoop 1 cup into the bowl at a time which usually lasts a few days. |

YT 2000 Club Member | I give fresh water a couple of times a day. I also free feed sometimes they eat all that I put out in one day and some times they don't. If they don't eat it in one day, I leave it for the next. Prissy is 7 years old now and she has never encountered a problem from this practice........knock on wood. Neither one of them are over weight from free feeding either.

| Sasha doesn't eat very much, and usually she has food left over the next day. But, the next day she finishes that and then I give her more. I think it's fine, as long as you're not setting out a huge bowl of food and letting it sit there a week, which I'm sure you're not lol! I agree that the whole bag would go bad if there were the case, as my brand isn't vacuum sealed, I just roll it up to close it! Just always remember to give fresh water each time you feed, as that definitely can get murky!
