| Most groomers will take care of it during grooming...I guess you can do it yourself...but I leave that part to the professionals LOL

| Sounds like a plan to me!!!!! I hope it doesn't have to be done to often though. Is it possible that it might not happen at all? Please say yes!!!!! |

| Not that big of a deal. If needed, it's done about every 4 to 6 weeks. The trick is learning how to feel if the glands are full. If they are, you can do it while they are in the tub. However, if you take your dog to the groomer regularly, they automatically check and express them.

| Boy this is one thing that I don't do. Max has never needed it but Mia's can occasionally get full - she seems to take care of it herself when she goes poop. I was afraid of doing it wrong and them getting infected. Here's a link with more threads on expressing them. Good Luck! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sea...archid=4481356

| Expressed Get your baby expressed. I like PetSmarts grooming bc if you ask nicely they'll take your baby over to Banfield (the vet in the store) and let the vet just do it. (But the groomer can do it to, my boo just likes the vet better than the groomer bc of the other dogs there) |

| I totally agree, that seems exactly what needs to be done. I have to admit..I like watching when they scoot! I think it looks really cute and funny! But yes expressing is needed. From what I know there are two ways to do it. Pushing on the outside upward and sticking your fingers in and expressing that way. The best is going internally. Your vet or groomer can do it for you. I have tried myself but just can never do it right and can not bring myself to go inside!!! Good luck!!!

he also just hates oter dogs. hes a very loving dog to people but combative with other (and much bigger) dogs. He cuddles with people but he's (at 4lbs) ran straight up to a Great Dane. I think i'll make this a thread bc I'm curious now | |

| They also scoot if they have worms, so double check that too.

this is so true... most groomers are tought to do it externally and vets are tought to do it internally (which is better) Our petsmart does not do it unless you specificly ask because if you do it once you will always have to do it. the only reason this needs to be done is because the dog stool is to soft and wont extract it on its own. If the stool is always firm then it will take care of itself. I like watching when they do it to because Bailey's face just looks so serious and liek she is getting violated... it is a bit funny.

| I groom, and was originally taught on the external method. However, my vet instructed me on the internal method. Both are good but, one must learn when to use one over the other. If you know that the glands are full and need expressing and expressing externally doesn't result in the desired affect. Then internal expressing is needed. Over expressing results in an animal's inability to express their glands on their own. So, doing it every 4 to 6 weeks is the best way. Toy breeds tend have more difficulty in expressing them on their own and not having them expressed can result in impacted anal glands, causing them to burst.
