I think the shampoo i am useing on Mocha is drying her out, and she is scratching something fierce! She doesnt have fleas, so i know its definitely the shampoo. Does anyone know a good brand of shampoo to use that will condition her skin and make her stop scratching???

Some people have a lot of luck with moisturizing or oatmeal shampoos. How often are you washing? A lot of the time, over washing can be real culprit as it can really dry out the skin. I generally use biogroom's oatmeal products (shampoo & conditioner) as its pretty gentle - just make sure you dilute it to the proper strength. If you're washing her once a week, try switching it to two weeks for a month or so and see if it gets any better.

Adding in fish oil and some vitamin e to her diet should also help the natural oils in her oil and moisturize the skin.

Hello, Yorkie family< I' m having the same problem with her dry skin,. I use the oatmeal shampoo and I bathe her maybe every two weeks and i was told to give her 2tsp. of vegetable oil. Is the veg. oil good for her?

Vegetable oil is very high in fat. However, you can buy fish oil capsuls (still fat, but a healthier form and great for dog coats) especially made for dogs, and I would recommend that instead. I just cut the tip of a capsule open and sprinkle it right on their food. Some dogs will just chew up the capsule but the oil squirts out and can make a mess. I also agree with not bathing too much.

Our female yorkie has had terrible skin problems this year. I use K9 Advantage faithfully every month. We found out the fleas are terrible this year, for one to jump on her can send her into a reaction with her skin, you can see the rash on her skin. The vet has advised to use the flea protector every 28 days and stated we might need to use every 3 weeks. We have never seen a flea on her but the male dog has had 1 dead flea and 2 that were very slow moving. We also bath them weekly and dilute the oatmeal and baking soda shampoo and conditioner more than recommened. Then rinse rinse rinse. The next thing we done was put them on the vet prescrible Royal Cannine skin and stone dog food which they will not eat without putting chicken or some type of canned food in it. With her still scratching terrible the vet prescrible a special shampoo to kill bacteria, it was only $48 for a mid size bottle and she still scratches. We also found out she is expecting so the problem multiplied. Please post any thing that might aid in slowing down the itch factor I would be very grateful.

I've used olive oil on Reesie and after a couple of weeks his skin has cleared up.

Well, my dog has a full but very brittle coat and it breaks off everywhere so I started off giving her one capsule in the morning and one at night for two weeks, then backed it off to once daily. She thinks it is her treat. You buy the capsules based on the size of dog and just follow the recommendation on the bottle. I have not looked in to liquid form, but that would be nice. Cutting those capsules open is messy and smelly! LOL.

While brushing Sandy's hair yesterday, I noticed there were some flaky skin on his back. He doesn't have fleas and those flakes don't move *lol*. I bathed him with Bio-Groom Fluffy Puppy shampoo and Silk Creme Rinse the day before for the first time. Am not sure if they're the reason his skin is flaky?
