| Garlic in Merrick We're switching from Wellness in a month or so, for variety and so Bandit will hopefully eat more (our puppy Nala isn't as picky nor skinny). They loved the Chicken Soup but because of ethoxquin we're not using it. I have a few samples of Merrick and they both seem to love the Turduken, but I just realized that ALL the flavors include whole garlic. Isn't garlic bad for dogs? |

YT Addict | When I was doing breed research for yorkies I did read this quite a few times. I don't know for sure if this is even true but I only assume it is since quite a few places claim it. As far as all dogs I don't know, though. I was only researching yorkies. It has the potential to make them sick. Similar to dairy products, they say dogs and cats are actually prone to be lactose intolerant but that doesn't mean if you feed your dog or cat milk (a lot of people actually do that apparently) that it will be sick. Someone with more experience would have to put a truth to these myths, though.

| Garlic, and to a greater extent onions, can permanently destroy hemoglobin. Small amounts of garlic shouldn't hurt and so many companies use it. A very large amount could be a problem, and in my opinion, small amounts over time are not a good idea. I personally would not choose a food with garlic if I could avoid it. If you have to feed it, it isn't a bad idea to keep up with CBCs.

vetinfo.com features a pretty decent question and answer section... where questions are answered by actual vets. to quote one of their questions: Quote:
to quote the ASPCA Quote:
Small amounts of garlic really aren't toxic. Large does however (due to the thiosulphate)... are. Garlic has been used as a flea repellant for years, and it can be used that way because if the dosage is correct it is in fact safe. If the small amount of garlic included makes you uneasy, by all means don't use it! But in all essence, its the accidental exposure/uneducated exposure that leads garlic to be listed more then anything else. Slight amounts in dog food? Ok. Licked up spill of garlic powder or a whole clove? No. | |||

| Thanks guys. I just ordered a whole sample pack of food from Luke's online and we'll test it out. Hopefully they'll both like a food without ethoxquin or garlic. |

| The trainer on "It's Me or the Dog" put fresh garlic in the food of a tiny Yorkie in Scotland to entice the dog to eat on its own. At the very least, garlic would make for one very smelly dog. |

| I fed Snickers Evo kibble which had garlic in it for over 6 months and he did great on it. I think its all about keeping it in moderation. I also HEARD from my crazy friend who owns a health food feed store that garlic helps with agility, she's crazy about PMR diet and says she gives her dogs whole cloves of garlic. I would never do that but I think a little is ok. Innova is considered a good company so I trusted it. - Snick & Viv

| When Bandit used to eat Innova puppy the first time, I noticed that there was garlic in it, and I emailed the company, and they actually had stopped putting it in that brand (I think it was the puppy- it may have been adult). It seems like as long as it's not a lot it's okay. |
