| Mia got spayed and I have questions Hello all Yorkie lovers, My 11month old Yorkie Mia got spayed yesterday. I was wondering. What are normal things I should pay attention to? What should I do and not do? Should I give her anything for pain ? One of my friends told me to give her childrens Tylenol another told me Childrens motrin and the vet said infants aspirin but I did not find aspirin anywhere. I'm trying to keep her from jumping but she sneaks one every once is a while. Also she has been sleeping all day is that normal? She only wakes up for about a minute then she walks to another bed or spot and goes to sleep all over again. I'm so stressed never had a dog before and don't know what to expect. When I went to pick her up. The Vet was telling me stuff but Mia did not really let me listen. Thank you everyone Marlene & Mia |

| She should be fine without pain meds, it will help to keep her from overdoing. For a week or two you want to limit exercise (jumping, running, stairs) to give her time to heal. Check the incision site at least daily. It should always be looking better, not worse. She should be eating and drinking, and going potty normally. She should become more active by tomorrow. Sometimes it's the anesthesia that makes them sleepy. At anytime you think she's not improving, call your vet. Look at your discharge instructions from the vet. Everything he told you should be written there. Hope she does well ... Make sure you offer her some food, don't wait for her to go to her bowl. You may have to feed her by hand. Some Nutrical wouldn't hurt either.

| Spay I just got my girl spayed a week Wednesday. The first two days were a little rough. You want to make sure she does not lick the area. My girl weighs 5 1/2 lbs. and I bought her some new born one-zs (sp) and cut a hole for her little tail and I would keep those on her except for when she had to go potty. I also put on a little neosporin. If she licks it you may have to get one of those collars. My vet gave me some pain medicine for three days. Make sure she drinks because she can dehydrate really quick. I learned that if they will not drink I will boil chicken and give her about a tablespoon chicken small pieces and add some water and she will drink the water to get to the chicken. Hope this helps |

| How's she feeling today? I didn't see your post until just now. All that sleeping is normal. She was under anesthesia and is recovering. I wouldn't be surprised to hear she is back to her normal self today. |

| it will take a day or two to get the anaesthetic completey out of her system...after that you will find the hardest thing is trying to keep her quiet and resting! |

| Pain meds should almost always be given after a spay. Some vets don't so, "They feel pain and take it easy." Others say that giving pain meds reduces inflammation and a dog who isn't in pain heals faster. I would go with the second. In fact, I strongly disagree with doing major abdominal surgery on an animal and expecting them to get through the pain. No way, no how. Tylenol and motrin should never ever be given. They can cause organ damage. Aspirin is more acceptable, but the vet should be willing to give you something specially formulated for dogs. If she is being too active, she will need to be held or crated...
