| It's been many, many years since I've had one in heat so I'm afraid I won't be much help. I don't think she should be uncomfortable, but you may want to get her some panties or something to help protect your furniture & carpets. Poor little girl - it is so scary when they're that small!

YT 500 Club Member | It lasts about 3 weeks in general. First the swelling and blood, 10-14 days later is the main danger period, its when their ready to mate, although it can vary, every bitch is different. The colour has usually gone off by this time so dont be fooled into thinking its all over- some can continue to bleed though-. After that the hormons gradually go off and dogs will loose interest. You just have to confine them until its over. Generally they dont get effected in the same way people do although for some they can have hormonal problems. I too have a tiny girl who's not going to make more than 4lb, but I intend to get her fixed. Better that than worry about her getting out and caught by a male. Now that would worry me to death. |

YT 500 Club Member | Some fixed males dont bother I think it can depend on what age they were neutered. If they'd reached ful maturity he could show interest or even try to mate her. I'll be giong through the same thing as you in a few months as I have a male who was fixed at 11months and just taking interest in females so to be safe when Rosie goes through her first heat they'll only be out together if some-one is around to keep an eye on them. They cant breed but they could tie and that could do alot of damage to my little girl. Best to err on the side of caution if you can and keep them seperate if your not there to make sure no accidents happen. |

| ooh that could be awful...we picked her up some diapers today...sooo cute! she's high steppin' lol ...but she'll get used to them. I here all day with her and night so I can keep an eye on tigger...you can see the size difference in one of the pics in her album...Our vet says we should go ahead and get her fixed so I think that's what we'll do but it scares me so much with her being so tiny...how often do they go into heat?

YT 500 Club Member | Meg jsut went through her first heat, and she's 4 lbs so we've been hesitant to spay her. It lasted for about 3 1/2 weeks for her. The frustrating part was the bleeding. I found that the little undies from Build-a-Bear ($4 each!) worked perfectly. I cut up a thin sanitary pad and put it in the undies. I attached a bell to her collar so that I could hear when she needed to pee, especially in the middle of the night. You can also keep her enclosed in a tiled area, but I felt bad about doing that. The bleeding lasted about 1 1/2 weeks for Meg. Meg didn't have any spotting during her fertile time. It wasn't a problem at ALL for us since she is never outside without me being next to her. I let her play (on a leash) with other small, leashed dogs in the neighborhood, and none of them got close to mounting her, even though she was stickign her little tooshie up in the air (what a slut!). Most of the dogs were fixed, but one puppy was not yet fixed. Of course, to be on the safe side, keep her away from all unfixed dogs. We were extremely vigilant in watching Meg while she was outside. All it takes is a second!!! (Well, actually I don't konw how long it takes, but I imagine it happens fast since so many dogs get pregnant "accidentally".) It was hard to know when she was totally finished with her heat. The biggest change was that her nipples and vag went down to their normal size. They had swelled significantly during her heat. Good luck! It's a pain to deal with a heat, but when the alternative is putting your dog under, I guess it's worth it.

YT 500 Club Member | They go into heat roughly every 6 months, from what I understand. I did some research on YT and found out several questions to ask the vet, including do they intubate ahead of time, is the table heated, how do they monitor the heart rate, what type of gas do they use, etc, etc. My vet actually said that she prefers to do the surgery on small dogs since there is less to work around/with. Meg's on the spay waitlist at the vet, but I still haven't made up my mind...

| thanks for all the info everyone...I feel like such a dummy...I will definitely talk some more with her vet and ask those questions...she is the tinyest little girl we've ever had and after losing our rhenny to such an accident we are all so over protective of her...I had my shelby rae fixed at 6months but she was much bigger ...she weighs about 10-12 pounds now..

YT 500 Club Member | Most breeds are about 6 months apart, however my girls tended to be more 8-9 months apart. Luckily we live a more enlightened age where people get their dogs fixed. I know it used to be very different over here in England and America, I can remember as a kid when we had a bitch and she came into season you would get hoards of males hanging around the house trying to get in at her. It was terrifing, all it takes is the girl leaving a few spots of urine outside and any loose dog will pick up the scent and track her down. Doesn'y do much for neighbourhood relations either. My neighbour has an uneutered male so we could be in for a niosy time when Rosie comes into heat as he's stuck outdoors in the garden all day long. |
