| A few questions about food and farting :) Prince as had gas a lot lately I feed him Purina Puppy Chow. I hear him farting every morning and a sometimes at night . He turns a year old June 23rd. When should I start feeding him adult food? Should I not even be feeding him Purina at all?? |

| Food You will find that a lot of people feed their pups different things. When I found this site I read many post about what was good and what was bad... For most they stay away from foods with fillers. I chose to give Molly Wellness Small Breed and am happy with my choice. Every time I take her to the Vets for shots they say she is nice and healthy. | Forgot They say to feed them puppy food till they are 1 but don't just change it all at once... Mix it a little at a time until you aren't using the puppy food any more... |

| I would definately get him on a quality food -- not Purina Puppy Chow -- it is full of fiber and that is what give the poor thing all the gas. IT fills them up, they will grow but there are lots better choices out there. Check out one of the dog food comparison sites like Dog Food Reviews - Main Index - Powered by ReviewPost Since he is almost a year old now, it would be a great time to make the change. You can feed about half of his current Puppy Chow and half of a new quality Adult or All Life Stage food. Do that for a week, then do 3/4 new food and 1/4 old food for a week, then you can probably go ahead and switch all the way to the new food. Some good choices: Wellness, Canidae, Chicken Soup, Merrick..... Another nice side benefit to switching to a quality food, you will find their poops are much smaller, compact, and easy to clean up.

| Purina, along with the other pet food you get at the grocery store, is very poor quality. It is made with the waste from the human food industry, the not-fit-for-human-consumption by products. Every pet owner should read this article from the Animal Protection Institute: What’s Really in Pet Food This is an excellent thread to help you find a better quality food: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...e-samples.html |

Some dogs don't process some foods properly perhaps, so it might be a certain ingredient or several in the puppy chow you've been feeding that doesn't sit well with your pup. | |

| I was feeding him puppy chow because that's what the breeder had been feeding him. I'd love for his poop to be smaller lol!! I guess I'll go to PetsMart after I do more research so I can ease him into something else... |

Usually to find the better brands out there, you have to find more of a Mom-and-Pop type shop near you. Pet Valu sells good foods near me. You can go to the websites of all the different dog foods of higher ends (Wellness, Merrick, Innova, etc) and type in your zip code to find the nearest store that sells their food near you. Do your own research though and make your own decisions Anything with by-products, soy or corn, I'd skip out on. Look for meat contents in the first ingredients.

| I have also heard that puppy chow is not good. I feed Buster & Bailey Science Diet Small Bites puppy food. The vet recommended it, and it seems to work well. I have found lots of coupons for it too, so I can save anywhere from $3 to $8 per bag, depending on the coupon. Whatever brand you choose, I would recommend googling "coupon" for that brand & see what you can find. Hope you find something you like!

| I've seen Wellness sold at our local Whole Foods store too. So maybe if you have one of those near you, they might be carrying that brand. I know I've seen the popular premium brands (NB, Wellness, etc.) being sold at a Petland Superstore here. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Gas is a sign that something is irritating your pup's digestive system -- I would look at some of the ingredients of what you're currently feeding, and then look for something different and of higher quality.
