Called the vet today and made the appointment to have my scoobies two baby teeth pulled and neuter. Now the vet suggest the heart worm vaccine ( that i know is important) but she also advised me that the doctor is going to suggest scoobie gets a cap for his teeth to prevent pulque buildup. now i brush scoobie theeth at least 5 times a week, because when i was taking scoobie back and forth to the vet for all the vaccines and checkups because he had a seizure from hypoglycemia he is my first baby and i am very over protective i want to make sure i do everything perfectly and he is treated with love and care at all times but is this stuff really necessay for him to have she also mentioned the new vaccine for the gums that the doctor may suggest. and the grand total with the neuter two baby theeth pulled will run me somewhere between 700-900 dollars. i sometimes feel as if i dont know what i am doing and i am easily persuaded when it comes to scoobies health. so i joined the site to get more info. can someone please help me??.. his appointment is this upcoming tuesday and i need some guidance from other people.
i have no problem paying for it but i like to hear others opinions

Heartworm vaccine?
Please look into this very deeply before going with it.
Heartworm preventative is good (Interceptor or Heartgard).
The only vaccine I know of is Proheart 6. Please Google it.

I've never heard of capping a dog's teeth.

Or are they talking about OraVet?

And monthly heartworm medicine should do just fine in preventing heartworm disease.
I got Jackson neutered, 4 baby teeth pulled, 4 month supply of heartworm medicine and microchipped for $175 total.

so the doctor advised me they would do a heart worm test and the prevenative they have at the office is called Revoloution and its a flea tix and heart worm prevenative, the theeth is calls ora vac and it is a sealant. but she also mentioned the new vaccine to prevent periodontal disease. is this really the same as the ora vac ?? and it seems to me like the price is rather high? i have been going to this doctor sice i got sccobie and they walked me through the seziures really well. but even at the time i felt they were trying to get my money by keeping him extra days in the hospital i spent over two thousand dollars on that vist alone

It is non-core and not usually recommended.

It sounds like the vet wants you to use OraVet. It is a wax-type sealant applied weekly. We use it here. It is very safe and I would go for it. The only thing is, there are eight applications per box, so it lasts for eight weeks but what some vets don't tell you is that since Yorkies' mouths are so small, you can split one application between two weeks.

I thought you were talking about the Proheart 6 heartworm vaccine which I wouldn't recommend. The monthly preventatives are fine, however, I personally prefer Heartgard or Interceptor over Revolution.

Thanks a bundle, i really appreciate it. i am mostly worried about his personality changing after the neuter, is there a reason why you perfer one brand over another. sorry if i ask alot of questions but it seems like you know alot more then me .

Although no heartworm medication is 100 effective, it seems like there are just too many reports of dogs getting heartworms even while on Revolution. It also doesn't seem it is as popular as Heartgard or Interceptor but has been blamed on more deaths and illnesses:

Intercepter and Sentinel are the same one is without flea medication.

About the dental vaccine for plaque buildup...be careful, someone I know dog had a reaction to it. As far as the heartworm vaccine, it is my understanding it was taken off the market do to it causing death. Revolution works as long as it is applied exactly every 30 days, it doesn't have a grace period like sentinal or intercepter. Sentinal and intercepter as the best as it is based on dog weight. Heartguard is fine but the weight charts are greater, which worries me. You're giving more than is necessary to a smaller dog.

It sounds to me that your vet saw you coming and is trying to take you for a ride. You should definitely stand up to him/her and not let them charge you for a bunch of unnecessary stuff. Have your dog's baby teeth pulled while he's being neutered and forget about the dental sealant. If you're brushing his teeth five times a week, he shouldn't have any problems with his teeth or gums later. Let the vet do a heartworm test, and start your dog on a monthly heartworm pill. I use Iverheart Max, the 12 pound size. My vet told me to break the pill in half and only give half for a six pound dog. This saves me money because the six month supply now lasts a year.

As far as your dog changing after being neutered, I think he'll only change for the better. I've spayed and neutered many, many dogs and none changed for the worse. My yorkie was neutered at 6.5 months and he was fully house broken by then, and has never marked in my house or even lifted his leg outside. He is almost 1.5 years now.

I hope you will learn to stand up to your vet. I think they see you as an inexperienced owner (possibly a young owner too

and it sounds to me like they are charging you way more money than necessary. If the vet keeps this up, don't hesitate to ask questions here. It sounds to me like your vet is charging you for a whole lot of stuff you don't need.

I forgot to add that my vet neutered my puppy and pulled four baby teeth and charged me $130, so believe me when I tell you that $700 - $900 is WAY out of line.
