Are Salt water pools toxic? - YorkieTalk.com Forums

I have to start by saying I love this site. My poor little baby Daisy seems to have really bad allergies and because her symptoms are not seasonal, I am guessing it is food related. I have learned alot about allergies and food from this site. I am in the process of switching my babies food to Natural Balance.

Now I have another dilema whith my second Yorkie. I rescued a 4 year old Yorkie who is obsessed with the pool. She loves to play with all the little grains of sand that sits on the top step. The problem is, our pool is salt water and Java is drinking it. A few nights ago she had me up because she was vomiting. Could the salt water be toxic?

I'm not sure how much salt is in your pool, but ocean water is salty, and if you drink too much you will vomit, it has too much salt in it for humans or animals to drink. Have you tried keeping a bowl of fresh water out by the pool?

Salt water pools are nothing like the ocean. You can taste the salt but it's not strong at all. I am definitely going to discourage her from drinking the water but she sure is a stubborn little girl.

Omg I just saw where you live... Ottawa and we are from kingston and jim is there renovating and he is about frozen...and your talking pools... daughter lives in Petawawa...

The pool is only at 60 so it is pretty cold, but it doesn't seem to bother my 3 1/2lb Java. There is only about an inch of water on the top step so it's just enough for her to play.

honey I was just really joking being from so close to you and I am in flroida still and my hubby is so complaining about how cold and rainy it is at home..

Glad you did not take it wrong.. he is renovating and coming back for me.. and he is getting it done as fast as he can to come back to sunshine and warmth.. lol

Salt water pools sanitize by the breakdown of salt into Hypochlorous Acid Chlorine and Caustic Soda.
Caustic soda (NaOh), or Sodium Hydroxide, is just a by-product of the process to acquire the HAC; a hazardous by-product none the less.
It is the same chemical compound used in Drano and Liquid Plumber to dissolve drain clogs.
Because of this chemical equation, salt water pools have been under fire as of late.

I would strongely incourage her not to drink from it.
