| Shots Dilemma Pizuki has a vet appointment tomorrow and she will be having three shots, lyme, bordetella and the rabies…I asked the vet if it was ok for her to have all those shots at the same time and she told me it was fine since one of them is through the nose so basically is only two shots…Anyhow I just have this feeling I should probably wait for the rabies to be given in a few weeks.. But then again I don’t know if I’m overreacting, she is a week away from turning 6 months and weights 4 pounds…any inputs for this dilemma would be great thanks. |

| You are right. It is not okay. Dr. Schultz, professor of immunology at Wisconsin State says that rabies should always be given separately because it is responsive for the most reactions. That is also a lot of their bodies at once. I would wait two weeks in between. You may have to give rabies first to comply with state law. Please make sure that the lymes vaccine is a good fit for your Yorkie because it is unnecessary in most areas of the country for the lives that most Yorkies lead. It is a non-core vaccine and there needs to be a good reason to give it...

| Thanks for letting me know…I would tell the vet to give just the rabies tomorrow and to reschedule the other shots…I’m pretty sure she would need the Lyme shot because we are going out of the country in two months ( South America) and is a travel requirement... |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | I wouldn't get the lyme vaccine unless you were going to be taking your pup into heavily wooded areas. Flea and tick meds work just fine for normal situations. I live in north jersey and would never give my yorkie the lyme vaccine. it has been known to kill these little guys. So if i weren't getting the lyme, then i would get the rabies and the bordatella on the same day. its unlikely that your pup would have a multiple shot reaction because the one goes up the nose so its not really a vaccine. However there is a chance your pup would have a rabies vaccine reaction. this happens with some pups no matter what age or what breed. Personally, i would have the two done if the pup hasn't reacted to any other vaccine given so far, but that is my opinion. Edit: just read that you are taking the pup out of the county for the lyme vaccine is necessary. In that case, i would get the vaccine on separate days. just make sure you get them long enough before you leave the country. With some countries you need to have the vaccines a certain number of days/weeks/months before you leave your country otherwise they won't let you in.

| Yes she did fine with her other shots…and you read my mind I was going to ask the vet if she could have the bordatella given tomorrow since it goes through the nose and what are the side effects of it… we are just dying to take her to the park and without the bordatella we haven’t been able to, I’m just afraid she would catch something… ohh and I would definitely find out how many days/weeks/months vaccines should be given before leaving the country .Thanks for bringing that to my attention… |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | anything from lethargy to death. a fatal rabies vaccine is very rare but it can happen, just like taking any other medication. most of the time they get sore in the area the vaccine is given and they are tired for a day or so. Most have absolutely no reaction what so ever.
