| Yorkie's SHOTS!!!! Ok... I am new to this site... and i am actually new to dogs all together... I have always had kittens... but my kitten died so i needed something new...and Yorkie's took the cake... So i just took Chevy(my puppy) to get his second set of shots (he received his first while with the breeder)... and its only been 3 hrs since he's had the shots, but his right arm/shoulder seems to be in SO MUCH PAIN... i cant even breath on it cuz he cries... I am assuming this is the arm the vets put the shot it... but should it be THIS SORE to where i cant even pick him up or touch in that area? p.s. he is only 8 weeks old and weighs 2lbs (teacup) Last edited by itzjussme87; 04-14-2009 at 04:47 PM. |

| Soreness at the injection site is very normal but if your pup can't take the pain, you should call the vet and ask what to do. They should have you do pain meds and/or Benadryl.

I would call the vet when you can and tell them how sore it is. They will probably not do anything right away but at least you are establishing a dialogue in case it gets any worse. They may offer advice on applying a cold compress. It's a shame the breeder did not keep them longer (at least til 12 weeks old) and give them at least 2 sets of shots before letting them go! And just an aside ..... yorkies are toy breeds with no teacup designation. I don't get all crazy about it but it is another red flag for a breeder to be telling you that. What is par for the course is that they told you that about a 2 pound 8 week old. Here someone is telling you he is going to be a teacup meaning on the small side when he is really toward the larger end of the Yorkie growth scale. Here is a chart that gives a guesstimate of what your baby might grow to .... he is probably going to be a 6 pounder. Of course, that can change and so many factors can change the course of growth, including what you feed. But, no way is 2 pounds considered small for an 8 week old Yorkie.

| My Rupert is sore for about 24 hours after getting shots. We can't even pet him on his hurt side without his crying a bit. He won't walk off of his little bed either, even to get a treat. I usually pick up the whole blanket and take it outside so he doesn't have to be moved to use the restroom. I'll also set his food and water bowl close. I wouldn't be worried unless it lasts more than a day or two. Ask your vet about giving baby tylanol. Our vet reccommends giving baby benedryl so he doesn't have a bad reaction to the shots, but I wonder if tylanol would help with the pain. I've never tried it, but with little wimpy puppies like ours, we might need to ask. |

♥Tiny Tia my Furbaby♥ Donating Member | I dont think they should be in pain I would check it out. Tia has her shots in the back of the neck, do they stick your shots in the leg?

YT 1000 Club Member | You could try some warmth like the heating pad. That might help keep it from getting stiff too. I'm sorry your baby is hurting poor thing. Roxie is due for hers too. UG! I hope your little one is doing better asap.

| I took Rupert to the vet later that night when he wasn't feeling good a few hours later because I was so worried, but the vet checked him out and said that it was nothing to worry about. The worst was when he got his microchip. That needle is huge!! |

YT Addict | It is normal for the injection site to remain sore for a while, but he should not be in severe pain, i have a chihuahua that was in so much pain they told me to give her a 1/4 of childrens asprin ,that seemed to help with the pain

That was a tiny momma dog! You don't see that too often since it is not recommended to breed a female under 5 pounds. That is 3 red flags for your breeder: letting them go before 12 weeks, selling them as teacups, and breeding a 3 1/2 pound female.

| Well to be honset, the breeder is not a factor in Chevy's life anymore and neither is his mom (any more anyways)... Chevy is mine now and "3 red Flags" isnt gonna make me love him any less... And his weight... I esimated on what "I" thought he wieghed then i went back and looked at his papers from the vet and got the correct weight... but anyway those of you who arent debating with me about the breeder... thanks for answering the ONE question i asked about him being sore after shots...Chevy is a very healthy pup so far... and is with a loving family...so i am happy! (tried to edit the above message and it wouldnt let me...) |
