Probiotics - Question & HELP???? Hi everyone, I really hope someone can help me decided? I won't go into the whole TJ story (most of you know already) but I am still have the gurgling and mucus poop issues with him. We have been to the Vet and we decided to change food to the IVD (I had to order it online and will be in tommorrow). After some more research and hitting my head against the wall over and over, I have come to some conclusions as to why he is having digestive issues: 1. He is still chew/eating stuff here and there (in small quantities) that he shouldn't. I just found a new chew spot on the wood dresser. Lastnight, I completely cardboarded (wraped in sheets) there room, SO THERE IS NOTHING LEFT FOR THEM TO GET INTO...except... 2. POOP EATING!!! 3. Allergic to his food /treats. This is why I am changing to the IVD food and treats. 4. This is what I just thought of: He started to really have this gurgling, mucus poop all the time right after he finished 14 days of Amoxicilin (sp). And from what I am reading that you should follow antibiotics with probiotics, RIGHT??? I think maybe he has a yeast thing??? Also, he is rubbing his face on the carpet, pillows, etc... like CRAZY, and I read that along with eye, ear discharge and a few other things mean yeast... So, I need help, what should I buy??? I read this: There are a number of products on the market which contain probiotics. Just be sure that the product you purchase guarantees the number of cfu (colony forming units) on the label. A Billion or more cfu per serving is desirable. Some of the probiotic supplements do not contain enough cfu to be of much benefit. The more cfu per serving, the more effective the product will be. You should store your product under refrigeration to increase the shelf life. You must keep it out of contact with moisture, oxygen, direct light, and heat as these things cause the beneficial bacteria to die more quickly. Most products should be discarded after one year as few viable cfu will remain after that time. Freeze dried products kept under ideal conditions can remain viable for longer periods of time. Digestive enzymes will further increase the effectiveness of your probiotic supplement. If you can find a product which includes digestive enzymes (amylase, protease, and lipase) you will get more for your money. I am deciding between these 2 products or if anyone has any suggestions??? http://store.yahoo.com/yhst-14660110...abybe15tu.html http://b-naturals.com/product_info.p...392787f1cfbe82 Roxy and TJ are eating boiled chicken and rice and I will continue to feed them this until TJ stomach calms down. But I also what to give him the probiotics as well and see if this helps. Then when things have settled and he is having normal poops I will stop all this and give them the IVD food and treats only! PLEASE HELP!!!! Thanks

I'm not a vet but I've dealt with the gurgling mucous problem now for 9 years. I believe I posted before that this sounds like a classic case of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. However, regardless of whether it is or is not you will never get to the botton of it if you don't narrow down the dog's diet to just the IVD or ID. That means nothing else added, no treats, supplements etc. Only after the situation has calmed down for a period of time should you add anything and only add one thing at a time. If all is well for two weeks then you can consider adding something else. I feed mine ID for treats as well. She gets the wet ID for meals and the dried as treats. She doesn't know her treat isn't the same as what the others get. This and prednisone have been the only things that have kept her episodes to a minimum. Her IBS is so severe that the vets did not expect her to survive for many years. She is now 12 years old.

Go to www.doghealth.co.uk and they have a product called Protect which is a probiotic powder. It worked for my dog who has colitis and IBS etc. We saw a result in a week of him taking it. Good Luck

I have dealt with a dog that had IBD for years, (now deceased) and don't waste your money on most of those probiotics. Use a natural yogurt, with Live Active Cultures, should say so on the label, and feed that. Dannon also makes a probiotic drink, can't remember the name right now, that is high in active cultures. Some grocery stores carry it. If you do want to go with a supplement, buy one from the health food store, the ones that will actually work are kept refridgerated, just open a capsule and sprinkle on food. I don't know if this will help, but Solid Gold came out with a canned tripe, called Green Cow, that is supposed to be very high in natural enzymes, and good for digestion. I started feeding it to my dogs and they love it. Don't know if it will help with your current problem, but after your pups tummy settles down, it may be worth a try for maintenance. http://www.solidgoldhealth.com/produ...id=60&code=260

I did look into the Protect from www.doghealth.co.uk, but it is just not cost effective to buy something from the UK. In the mean time I did order both the items from my above post (I am just trying to cover every base). However, I do want to give him something when I get home. Yorgut sounds great, but I am soooooooo nervous to give it to him, I am scared the dairy will upset his tummy! So, I think I should go to the health food store and buy a supplement to put on his food from the refrigerated section, like you said. Is it ok to give him human supplements????

It says: "Guaranteed Analysis: Total Live Microorganisms: 5 billion CFU/gram, 3.5 Billion CFU's per 1/4 Tsp." Take a look at this link: http://www.eaglepack.com/pages/Added...tml#Probiotics

If my Yorkie was sick and I could cure him I wouldn't care where I ordered it from as long as he stayed healthy. If someone told me there was a cure in Australia I'd order some, distance would be no object where my yorkie is concerned, only the best for him.

Well, it turns out that I can't give him anything anyway. His new special IVD food and treats came in. I have to be very strict and only feed these IVD products to TJ and Roxy. If his problems start again, I will bring him back to the Vet and I will discuss our next steps. I will also ask about all these products. Ordering from the UK just didn't seem good b/c I really needed it quick. I knew his special food would be in on Friday and that I couldn't give him anything after that. I did wind up going to the Vitamin Shoppe and got a really good Probiotic. I sprinkled it on his food Thursday night, but Friday Am it was back to those episodes. Thanks everyone for all your great advice! I'll keep you posted! Last edited by TLC; 09-10-2005 at 11:48 AM. Reason: wrong word

Here in the UK we recently had a program on the value of probiotics. The conclusion the Professor came to was that the yogurts and yogurt type drinks like Danone, are a waste of money as the cultures contained in them are destroyed by the stomach acids. He says that probiotics are only useful after taking antibiotics or for a medical condition that would benefit from them. The probiotics to use then MUST be acid stable ones to have any beneficial effect. I just thought I would share this with you. I have some sites with probiotics which claim to be acid stable. I don't know if they are good are not, but they look as though they are the sort of thing he was suggesting you use. culturelle, probiotics, probiotic supplement, probiotic benefits, probiotic foods, digestive health, acidophilus, Lactobacillus, healthy bacteria, immune strength, bowel discomfort, stomach discomfort, Ask Ariel Your Pet Nutritionist Another company which is famous for its probiotics is Biocare. They are VERY expensive and definitely acid stable. I will see if I can find their web address and add it to the ones I have given you. I hope I got the links correct! Just feel a little worried that the first one should be _p_ instead of -p- so if it doesn't work you know how to fix it! Luv Franceen

Here is the link for Biocare in the UK. This is a very well respected company whose products are used by the top Nutritionalists in the UK. All their products are of the highest standard and quality, but are very expensive. BioCare The probiotic you would need to look at (they do several types, as this is one of their specialities) is Bio-Acidophillis. I am not sure if they have a outlet in the USA but you could have a look at health shops there and see if they carry their products. Hope this is of interest to you. Luv Franceen
