| size determined by genes or food? so i just got back from walking my older pup, kenji. i met this lady who was walking her yorkie as well. she asked what kind of dog kenji was and i told her he was a yorkie. she didn't believe he was a yorkie because he was so big. i started thinking about all the YT members who experienced this kind of encounter anyways, she asked me why is he so big (kenji is 12 lbs btw). i told her it was just in his genes. she asked how many times i fed him and i said twice a day. this lady just couldn't get over his size. she then told me that he's big because i was feeding him too much. then she asked me what kind of food i was feeding him. i started to get a little annoyed because i just wanted to continue our walk so that kenji can go potty and i could make it back home in time to catch american idol. can anyone back me up here and tell me that i'm right when i said my yorkie is big because it's in his genes? it's got nothing to do with the food i'm feeding (orijen puppy food) or the amount i'm feeding him (1/3 cup twice a day)--right? i mean--you can't force a puppy to grow bigger by what and how much you're feeding---right? when i say "big" i mean long legs and long body, not necessarily fat, because that is exactly how my pup is.

| Of course you're right, that is ridiculous. I mean if you overfeed your dog it may get WIDER but not taller and longer. Some people never cease to amaze me. Why don't they get that Yorkies come in all sizes just like every other living thing in this world?

Thor's Human Donating Member | Judging from the yorkies here, kenji is in very good company with his size. It's not uncommon at all. I imagine if you UNDERFEED a pup, you could stunt his growth, but he'd be skinny and miserable. Man, people can be dumb.

| His frame is determined by his genetics. It is possible for your dog to be under or overweight for it's frame based on the amount you feed but your dog is not 12lbs instead of 6lbs because of food...well not unless he is very obese LOL. I swear some people... I think if you deprived a puppy of proper nutrition while it's growing you could stunt it's growth but I doubt too drastically

| That's ridiciulous. Jackson is probably reaching 12 pounds pretty soon (he's 5 mths old) and he's not fat at all. He's on a good food. He actually is kinda skinny to me. The vet says he is perfectly healthy.

| Your frame size is determined by genetics. The amount of meat on that frame is usually determined by the nutritional intake. If you are feeding a puppy, you should feed 3 times a day. Their systems require food for growth as well as for maintenance. The long discussion of wether your puppy should have fat stores or not will rage on and on. I prefer to have my puppy with a little extra weight just to ere on the side of caution. If he has some fat, then hypoglycemia will not pose much of a threat. From what you are saying, he sounds just fine to me. Ignore the Village Idiots out there with their comments about his weight. |

BANNED! | you are right and I agree why would someone feed their dog less cause he or she needs to be a standard size for instance i have a inlaw who got a yorkie that her mother inlaw which is my aunt is baby sitting and she tells my aunt to feed him once a day cesare dog food and her poor dog is full of bones because she said he isnt sappose to be big these dogs arent sappose to be big people need to read the history of a dog before they purchase it yorkies were used in factorys to kill rats now a 7 pound yorkie could not kill a 13 pound rat a rat is a size of a cat and the reason why most yorkies are small its because that is what is in demand so just because it says my dog should be 7 pounds im not going to miss feed him if he wants to eat i feed him he dosnt over eat he hides his food around the house most of the time and the vet said he isnt fat because if u press against his skin u can feel his ribs he said when u press and dont feel that than he is fat he said he is perfect weight height and size so im happy with my big boy... people believe what they hear noone research's anything.. |
