My Petzlife Gel Concerns

I had E-mailed Petzlife customer service about Lacy's hepatic lipidosis and my concern over the alcohol, and the owner of Petzlife - Bud Groth e-mailed me back and provided his phone number for me to call and talk with him. I called him this morning and spoke with him for about 20 minutes. VERY NICE MAN and from talking to him, you can tell he truly cares about the animals. He didn't give some automated company-type response but was very personable and said he was so glad I brought up my concern. He said he had spoken with the person that left the negative review posted on amazon in this thread, but they never did any follow up with him. He said he cannot guarantee that no dog or cat will be adversely affected by the product because each animal is an individual, but he truly feels like the product is very safe, as do many many vets who have used the product for their clients for years. He said the alcohol used is to keep the oils suspended in the gel and that the amount used is so minimal that most evaporates before it is even swallowed.

So...after speaking with him I really really doubt Petzlife led to Lacy's problem and I'm really sure the product is very safe. The amount of alcohol is so small. I am going to bring this up Saturday when I speak to Dr. Gordon and Dr. Davis, but I will probably keep using the product. I most likely will just use a very small amount a couple times a week and try to brush teeth with dog toothpaste every evening.

This is extremely difficult because the product does work for some (and not much for others). Does the benefit outweigh the risk of anesthesia? Maybe, but it is a new product, so who knows if it is causing liver disease?

Just reading that a board certified dog dentist says that it is best avoided has me really questioning things. Honestly, he is an expert. I won't ignore his opinion.

And a lot of it comes down to, how much is "a little bit". Is that a couple drops in the whole bottle or, because it is the second ingredient, does it make up 40 or so % of the product?

do you have the info from the dog dentist? I haven't seen any other real negatives other than just discussion on this forum and the one negative review i mentioned above.

Petzlife has been on the market for at least 5 years I believe. If you'd like to talk to him, he can probably give you the exact amount of alcohol in the product.

Roxy's dentist advised against using it.
For what's it's worth, evidently his dad invented the parvo vaccine...

Since Ellie is liver compromised and so little is known about the product, I won't use it...

And while it is probably perfectly safe for most or all dogs, most people don't test their dogs bile acids, so there is still more to learn...

Roxy had her last dental done by a Board Certified Dental Vet who expressed concerns over the grain alcohol. When I asked if I should stop using it, he said "I would".

Here is some info on what he recommends using. Maxi/Guard is one product.

P.S. I would be curious as to what case studies and scientific testing the company did and has that provides the proof the most of the alcohol evaporates before it is even swallowed ???

I checked out this website and their "approved" products. Ther approved oral care foods are by producers such as Purina, Eukanuba and Science Diet - all of which we know to contain carcinogens along with just crap ingredients.

They also have "approved" greenies and rawhids - again products that can be lethal for our yorkies.

I can tell you that I also spoke with PetzLife last year when Sissy was having high lipase levels and was very comforted by the concern given and very satisfied with the response of their vet. I recently began using Dental Clean for Sissy's teeth and I can tell you they look 10 times worse than when I was using PetzLife.

Recently one of mine had several vomiting episodes (about 5 times over the span of 36 hours), followed by a couple days of bloody diarrhea.
I had used Petzlife just a couple hours before it all began. Coincidence? (It was the ONLY difference in his routine).

I've also recently heard there may be a link between alcohol and oral cancers.... Considering the vomiting/diarrhea issue and possible negative impact of the alcohol in the product, this won't be coming near any one of my kids' mouths again.

I have used it on Lady who has multiple health issues for years with no problem.

He mentioned gel but what about the spray?

I have used this product for about 3yrs and swear by it.
I have no worry what so ever using it. The results are amazing.

I am really happy to hear how the customer service for this product was very helpful to people that had questions and concerns...It is also good to hear that this product does work for those that use it.

I too used this product for about 2 years, but with Roxy having MVD, and TJ getting sick from the one time I used the gel on him, I decided (for me) that the possible risks out weighed the possible benefits.

Thats funny because all of my do well on this except Manolo. It made him sick. His tummy was real hard then, EXPLOSION, Major Diarrhea,even on my walls, YUK took me hours to clean that mess up. He is great now. Wont ever use this on him again.
