Well I haven't posted on here in forever.. But I took Rainbow to the vet on saturday and we found out that she has luxating patella... He said she would need to have surgery and made us an appointment with a specialist. I dont know what to do..Anyone have any advice...I am so heartbroken??

Did the vet grade it?
Grades 1 and 2 may not require surgery.
Grades 3 and 4 likely will.
Did the vet put her on glucosamine?

I agree. you might wanna know how serious it is first.
Dolly has grade 1, her vet has put her on Desuquin since day 1, and she's never had a problem with her knee popping out, etc.
maybe get some supplements (cosequin or desuquin) before you go the surgery route if its not too bad

I don't know how to help you or give any advice on this, but I wanted to say Im sorry that she was diagnosed with it. It would be heartbreaking for me also!

Had you not brought your pup to the vet- would you have known anything was wrong with his legs?? ie- does he limp, or pull his back leg up at all when he is walking? The general rule is if it isn't affecting his daily life- it is probably only grade 1-2 and that does NOT need surgery. If he is in obvious daily pain then, yes, surgery is probably best. You might want to get a second opinion if you don't think surgery is the way to go.

My dog has luxating patella also, the vet said surgery is our only option. Her knee was popping out quite a bit but has calmed down alot and now she hasn't limped in a couple months, she did once when it was really really cold out. But it doesn't even pop out anymore either. I would get a second opinion and some vitamins!

I would also like to know more about this. When I took Carlos last week my vet told me the same thing and suggested surgery. I really do not know anything about it and had no idea that Carlos was even suffering from this. He has never limped or showed signs of it bothering him.

We just went in for yearly shots...but she does hold her back leg up when she runs..sometimes..He checked her out and said it wasnt really affecting her now, but it would when she got older. So he said to go ahead and meet with the other doctor and see what he says..she doesnt cry or anything.. and she isnt in any pain...i just want her to be a healthy baby..

I just found out that Maija has the same thing. The vet didn't seem worried when he noticed it and just said that if she hasn't shown any signs of it affecting her then there was no problem. I was told to just make sure I keep her at a healthy weight and keep her coat light (so we might go for a cut here soon) and she will be fine. She never shows signs of anything so for now I am not worrying. I would get a second opinion if I were you.

Your vet is right. Luxating patellas themselves aren't painful. It's the arthritis that occurs as they age that causes pain. That's why it's best to get the surgery done sooner rather than later if they are grade 3-4. Unfortunately, some people wait too long and surgery is no longer possible and the dog must live in chronic pain.

I'm glad you are getting s second opinion.

A good joint supplement like Cosequin with help with arthritis. It won't help with the structural problem with the knee, though, so it won't replace surgery of the grade is 3-4.
