Losing Teeth... Fast!!!

Last week my 4mo. old yorkie, Isis, lost a tooth on the bottom row. When I looked last night, half of her top row is missing from this weekend alone! Is this normal? She seems OK, but should I do anything differently? I am a new yorkie mommie and I would appreciate any suggesttions you may have. I always find this forum extremely helpful.

This is a good thing - this way, she won't need as many baby teeth pulled out during her spay. Her mouth could be sore/bothering her - you may want to make sure she has plenty of chews (safe ones for when she's alone, bully sticks/edible ones or whatever when you can watch her) to help her relieve her mouth and to help continue healthy tooth-loss.

Every tooth she loses on her own saves you 10-15 dollars, so think of her as your little tooth fairy. For some reason, yorkies have a problem losing their baby teeth, and nearly all of them need some pulled, you must have some great chew toys that allow her to loosen the teeth. If they don't lose the baby teeth, the permanent teeth can come in wrong, and the double row of teeth causes food build up, decay, and bad breath.

Mine is 4 months old also, is she still eating ok? I am worried about this too but have not seen any gone yet. She is 4 months today.

Joey didn't lose any till later, and had to have about 6 pulled. Sometimes they swallow them and you won't see them, they are really tiny.

Harley lost all of his teeth rather quickly too! I was lucky enough that I found three, so I was able to keep them. Harley didn't eat as well, so we just softened his kibble a little bit with warm water. When he went in for neuter he only had two that hadn't came out!

The more teeth she loses now, the less you have to get extracted when she gets spayed. Consider yourself blessed. Their teeth also grow back really fast too, so don't be suprised to see a baby tooth gone one day and another tooth in place the next.

I'm not even exagerating when I say that Chip's grew back in 24 hours. I made a habit of checking his mouth every day and one day I would see a hole and the next day there was a tooth.

Ella wasn't losing any teeth, and I was getting worried. Then, about three weeks before her spay, they just started coming out. I collected about 7 of her teeth, and she only had to get a handful pulled when she got spayed. If your puppy's mouth is sore, you can soak a washcloth or rag in water and put it in the freezer for a few minutes. Ella liked to chew on that right after a tooth fell out (it also helps clean up any blood from the tooth).

Strawberry has no teeth on her front, bottom row at all. I noticed one missing and the next time a checked they were all gone. Some of missing from the top too. She loved chewies though, so I guess she is losing like crazy. She just got spayed 3 days ago and the vet said nothing about removing teeth. I hope he is not trying to get a 2nd procedure out of me.

How likely is it that Strawberry will not need any pulled? I mean, she did lose all her bottom front ones so I know that is good.

You shouldn't be worried, this is very common, but the teeth really need to be pulled if the new teeth are starting to come in. Double rows of teeth set-up a very unhealthy dental condition with food gathering between the double rows. Are you having your pet neutered, if so, this is a good time for it, since he is still young, you will keep him from ever marking. Much longer, and he will start to mark, and neutering won't completely eliminate the marking. Pulling the baby teeth during neutering is the best option, since they don't have to be put under anesthesia more than once.

I'm really bothered that some vets don't mention this, perhaps he doesn't treat that many Yorkies, and doesn't understand that nearly all have to have some removed. I believe it's the canine teeth that they have the most problem losing on their own. I would talk to the vet about this, he should be aware of this fact.
