| Double teeth? Lexi had a few of her baby teeth pulled when she was spayed, but she didn't have all of her adult teeth yet. Now, I see double canines on the top. I know the baby teeth will need to be pulled. Has anyone gone through this? What is the procedure? Will she have to be put under anesthesia again? Would I have to leave her for the day, as I did when she was spayed? Obviously, I will be making an appointment with my vet and getting answers there, but I just wanted to know what to expect before I go. Thank you! ~Robbye |

| When my pup was around 5-6 months, she had double canine. I thought it looked kinda cute like a little monster, but the baby canines fell out a week or two later. Now she has her adult canines in. |

| How old is she? I would wait til at least a year to see if they come out on their own before I'd put her under again unnecessarily. |

Thank you both. Lexi has had her double canines for several weeks now - maybe around a month, at least. I did call the vet today. They actually said to wait until she was about a year old, and then see. I guess they can still fall out before then? She is just a few days shy of 8 months. Thanks again...I will wait and see - and hope they come out on their own! | |

| Trinity had double canines also. I noticed them when she was around 8-9 months old. Vet said to wait til she was at least 12-14 months old because they sometimes come out on their own. At 18 months I took her in and had them removed. It was an all-day affair...anesthetic required. Had her teeth cleaned at the same time. Anitbiotics before the procedure and a few days afterward also.

| Teeth Tico was neutered at a year old. The vet noticed he had most of his baby teeth still in, as well as his adult teeth. He said he would probally have dental issues if we left the double teeth like this. So Tico ended up being neutered and having 16 teeth pulled that day. And he still wanted to run around a shake his toys up after all that!!haha |

YT Graphic Artist Donating Member | Is there any danger if they are not removed? Sapphire has some doubles and she is now about 14 months old - and there is no sign of them dropping out. On the other hand, I'd hate to have her go under (she's 4 pounds) unnecessarily. What are the down sides to keeping the teeth??

| Double Teeth Romeo also had double teeth. He has lost all of his but two. He is 13 months old. He is going to be neutered next month and the vet said she would remove them at time if the two left have not fallen out. I was hoping he would lose them all but I am happy he is down to only two. |

| The down side of leaving them in is tooth decay and bad breath. If they don't fall out on their own I would definitely get them removed but its not an emergency so I would wait and do it the same time as a full cleaning or spay/neuter surgery.

| Milo's "mom" had a couple of baby teeth that the vet never caught and just recently had to have two root canals! I say get them pulled don't leave them in. Milo had some double teeth and got them pulled when he was neutered. Glad that we did it. |

| Tooth decay is the main result of leaving them in. Its very dangerous and can lead to a lot of health problems down the line. They can cause adult teeth to grow in 'wrong' and affect the bite of the dog, causing problems, so there is a benefit to acting a little sooner then a year... My Ella Bean was nicknamed "Sharkie" by the vet because she only lost a handful on her own and the rest needed to be pulled. She was spayed and had between 10-15 teeth pulled at the same time. The vet lost count! Before you have them removed, make sure you are regularly brushing her teeth and she has plenty of chew sticks and toys. Your dog will do great! The main risk is the anesthesia and the pulling itself causes some discomfort after, but they heal SO fast!!!!

| Hi folks--hope you don't mind me asking a question or two in this line. Pixie is 31 weeks and has lost some baby teeth. I want to have her spayed before going into heat (if possible) but deal with the baby teeth at the same time. At what age do they usually go into heat? Also, would I be wise to have all the baby teeth remaining pulled at the same time? Or only those with double teeth? Should I postpone the spaying for a few months so as to deal with more teeth? Thanks for the advice! Merle, Pixie (yorkie) & Chica (chi) |

| Very common with the small Yorkie breed. Every Yorkie we have owned had to have the retained baby teeth removed. Number of seven so far... Our vet no longer performs dentistry and spay at the same time due to risk of possible bacterial exposure.

| Both of mine retained double canines on the top. Both of them had been neutered at about 5 months, so a mouth-load of first teeth was to be expected. I was beginning to get a bit worried, but I started giving them tuggy toys, especially a very large floss rope. By large, I mean LARGE: the rope was bigger than the dogs by a goodly bit . By playing tug with them, and pulling the "floss" through their teeth, the baby teeth finally dislodged. My little boy retained one baby tooth, wiggling around in his mouth. So - like any good mom, I took a piece of tissue, grabbed the tooth and gently tugged. Out it came. All their other teeth (including molars) came out on their own. They get crunchies (Orijen) and various hard rubber chew toys, so that may have helped, too. They DID look rather strange with their beautiful pearly white adult teeth and those little vampire spikes |

| Pixie lost another tooth last night but she won't let you look on her mouth. At least they are going--the large floss rope is a good idea. As she is 8 months next week I may break down and have her spayed before Christmas and the vet can take a look at her remaining teeth then. Thanks. Merle, Pixie (yorkie) & Chica (chi) |
