Vaccinations: too many, too little, what? - YorkieTalk.com Forums

I'm about to be picking up my new pup on Monday, and he will be 12 weeks old. Obviously I'll be getting all his shot and vet records, and then I'll be taking him to the vet on our way back home for a "free" vet checkup from the breeder.

I've occasionally heard people say on here that a puppy shouldn't be OVER-vaccinated, but of course I want to make sure he gets all the vaccinations he needs to that we can start going for fun walks together as soon as possible.

I intend to trust my vet, but I still want to go there armed with as much info as possible so I can talk intelligently with him about my pup's care, including what vaccinations he'll need and when. My question is this: what, specifically, are the vaccinations a yorkie(ish) puppy needs, and what are these "extra" vaccinations that they may not need?

I do know that you don't want to give them Lepto or Corona- for sure! Especially on a puppy. But i'm sure someone will come along who knows more!

There is so much on YorkieTalk about vaccinations, so you can use the search function to come up with some threads.

If I had a Yorkie puppy, they would get distemper, parvo, hepatitis and possibly parainfluenze at 10, 12 and 18 weeks and rabies at 16 weeks (Michigan law requires it but I'd hold off as long as possible). Then they would get distemper, parvo, hepatitis, rabies and possibly parainfluenza a year later and then no more than every 3 years after that unless titers came back very low. I would suggest never getting rabies at the same time as another vaccine. If you wait til 10 weeks to start vaccinating, your pup will be unprotected for longer but if you start to soon, maternal antibodies will fight the vaccines and make them worthless...

Lepto, corona, lymes, giardia, bordatella and the dental vaccine are all non-core ( along wtih parainfluenza) and there needs to be a good reason to give them. A couple of them I'd never consider givng.

Lepto has killed Yorkie pups and there needs to be an extremely good reason to give it. It doesn't protect against all strains either. If you "have" to give it, I wouldn't until at least 16 weeks.

With any vaccine we also wait at the vets or in their parking lot for about a half hour. That is the usual time of when a reaction can accur although it can take longer. Watch for facial swelling. We have never had it happen, but I would rather be safe than sorry!! We do not give corona or lepto. Check with your vet though!! Our vet doesn't even give lepto to his OWN dogs!

Everyone who replied had really good answers. I do suggest searching vaccinations on this forum, if you wanna learn more and make a good decision.

I'll tell you what I gave my puppy.
She came with me having the DA2PP. (first shot)
Well I took her to my vet and she gave her just DAP (at 12 weeks, then 16 weeks) (Distempter, Adenovirus, Parvo).
I have an awesome vet and she knew any other vaccines were really just unnecessary.
We also waited two weeks after her last set to give her the rabies. Didn't want to overwhelm her little body.

I considered giving her Bordatella but, it's kind of like the flu shot. Even if you do get it theres a chance you'll still get the flu (or your dog will get kennel cough). So I opted out on that one.

Oh I wanted to add about the bordetella since raray08 brought it up

We give it because we take our babies to different places a LOT and where other dogs are so I don't want to chance it. Like she said there is a chance they can get it - from the up the nose vaccine. We have had it twice from it. Once on a pup that just got the sniffles and once on a puppy that we bought that got it full blown and had to be one meds. So there is for sure a chance, but that is only twice out of many times of giving it and nothing happened. There is a shot that can be given (I have never used it though) that is a KILLED strain. I have heard it stings a lot? Anyone used that one?

HMM I've never heard of the shot. Stings? OUCH. I guess that would be something I should research and see how well it really works.

I actually did try to do a search on "vaccinations," but the search function refused to bring anything back for me - it said "vaccination" was too long or too common of a word, and it was eliminated from the search, lol. If you go to the bottom of any page, there is a Google search there. You can select to search on YT instead of the web.
