Dark skin on and around penis

Hello -

I know that this will sound like a strange first post (I mainly search and read posts here), but I'll forever be an overprotective mom of my little guy, Cookie. We adopted Cookie about a year and a half ago from the Humane Society; he'd been found dumped in a park in a horrible rain/lightning storm.

Anyway, Cookie is a purebred Yorkie. I'd never really noticed this before, but the skin is dark around and on his penis, although it's also a light pinkish color in places. I never really noticed this before, so it's quite possible that this is simply the color of his skin. He has had a bladder infection before, so I just want to make sure that this is not indicative of any problem. I feed him Natural Planet Organics dog food and try to do all the best for him.

Please let me know if anyone thinks that there could be a problem (or if your dog is naturally darker there as well....just so I know I'm simply crazy).

I'm so sorry none of us has gotten back to you yet! WELCOME and bless you for saving this little guy!

Funny you asked this, bc I just went to the vet w/ my Wylie bc he had some little brown "spots" on his outer manhood area - and she said it was totally nothing. He doesn't have discolored skin, per se, but he does have the spots. But, I don't think what you're describing sounds too abnormal from what I've heard. Could you post a picture maybe?

It's reassuring to hear that Wylie's vet said that his dark spots were nothing to worry about.

I just had never noticed that his skin was darker "down there" before. The second half of his "manhood" skin is darker in color and it's light pink at the other end. Also, around that area, it's also darker skin. It is the skin color rather than anything else.

Perhaps it's always been darker. <shrug> I just wanted to know if anyone else ever had any problem (bladder stones, kidney problems, etc.) which caused the skin to darken. Most likely I'm just paranoid.

When he did have a urinary track infection last spring, I made the vet run TWO tests to make absolutely sure that it was cleared up. What can I say? He's my little guy!
