| New Mom worries Hello everyone!! This is such a wonderful site. Anyway's, I'm a new Yorkie Mom. We got Mojo yesterday. (8 1/2 weeks old) He did great. Ate his food, (from the breeder) drank, pottied outside....then we had company. They brought their Yorkie & both played & got along well. Later that evening Mojo threw-up some food. After that he has not wanted to eat or drink anything. He slept in his crate by my bed all night (got up 1 time to pee then I brought him in bed with me). He has been very sleepy all day. I put some Karo syrup on my finger & he wanted no part of it, so I pushed it in the side of his mouth. I'm really worried about him. He still is going outside every hour & pee's, but no poop. Of course it's Sun. so the vet is closed. I don't know if I'm overreacting, but how long do I wait? Any advise would be greatly appreciated. |

| He could just have a sensitive stomach because of all the new changes. Did he eat the same food the breeder gave him? If not thaqt could be the cause. I would just keep an eye on him and if he keeps it up take him to the vet.

| Welcome Hi and welcome...new pups can get overtired the first few weeks. Try not to allow him to play too long without a rest period/nap. What are you feeding him? |

| I am feeding him Purina Puppy Chow (cuz that's what the breeder had him on....I will switch him gradually, I know that's not good food) We did give him little liver soft treats by Bil-Jac to encourage him into his crate. He only ate about 3 treats yesterday. I'm going to let him sleep most of the day & see how he does. He is still responsive, but just wants to sleep. I feel like I did when my boys were babies....worry, worry, worry, now they are 17 & 15 & I don't worry at all, & probably should |

| Sounds like you are doing everything right. That was smart of you to keep him on the same food the breeder was feeding. Hopefully its just a case of nervous stomach and he'll be back to okay soon.

ahh yes, welcome to the world of worrying. The people on this site are all very helpful so I am glad you found YT. 8 weeks is very young for a Yorkie. Many breeders don't let us have them until they are 12 weeks old. I didn't let my pup play with another dog until she was 16 weeks old and had all her shots. But then my sons are 21 and 24 and I STILL worry so don't listen to me | |

| I think he may be overwhelmed. When my puppies go to their forever homes, I give them a letter from the puppy full of personal info. about themselves and asking that they take the pup straight home, not stopping anywhere to show him off (which is so tempting), and not to have people come over to see him for a minimum of 3 days. So many adjustments to go through so quickly. That you are worrying shows that you are going to be a great Mom. Give him quiet time with his new family and maybe hold back on the treats right away. He may not have ever had them before. I'd suggest a tube of Nutical and give him a pea size drop from your finger when you feel it is necessary. Make sure he is drinking. After the first couple of weeks you will both be settled in and wonder how you ever got along without each other! Puppy naps are a NECESSITY. Don't let him run himself ragged, it will throw off his sugar level. |

| I bought mine at the vets office for like $6.50. Aslo, I had a typo, it is Nutrical. Full of nutrional calories. So it is the beginning of both words. How is little Mojo right now? |

| He is sleeping in his crate right now. He still hasn't eaten or drank. I was thinking maybe I could use an eyedroper & drop some sugar water into his mouth when he wakes up. What do you think? |

| Yes. A good tip is to put the dropper in the back corner of his mouth. You don't have to try and pry his mouth open at all, it will fit right in and he will automatically drink as you slowly administer the water. Give him like 4 droppers full to begin with. Do this again a couple hours later. Don't let him get stressed over it. Just tell him what a good boy his is when he drinks it. He is missing his littermates, his Mamma, and the humans who took care of him since the minute he was born. Show him how much you love him and he will catch on. If it has been quite some time since he drank, I'd get him out of his crate right now and do this. PLEASE let me know how this goes. I am worried about the little bugger. |

| Not ready I don't feel that an 8.5 week old pup is ready for company. They are like a newborn baby at that point, plus they do not have all their shots yet and should be isolated from people and pets outside the immediate family. For this reason, I did not take my boys to public places or parks to potty until they had all their shots. The pup is probably just exhausted but when they are that young and tiny, it does not take much to tire them out. Nutrical is a must for a new pup. I would restrict his activities to let him get used to the routine of your home and to minimize exposure to anything detrimental to him. JMHO. |

| I gave him droppers of water mixed with a little Karo syrup, then I took him outside. He really seems to have perked up. He romped around the yard & played with a leaf. I think he was just too tired from all the excitement around here. I'll feel better once he drinks on his own, but for now I think he is okay. We are keeping things quiet & letting him go in & out of his crate to nap on his own. Thanks for all your help. |
