| I need a recipe fast! I am leaving for Florida Saturday morning and leaving my little ones in the care of my DH. DH loves these furry critters but I know he won't bother to feed them the way I do. Cassie gets geriatric food mixed with a bit of kibble, Adie gets Ultra for small dogs with a bit of chicken mixed in and Skeeter gets Royal Canine for small breed puppies with a bit of chicken and rice Proplan for puppies mixed in. I need a recipe to cook up that DH can feed all of three of them while I am gone. I need to be able to store it in the fridge and I would like it to be chicken-based. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Cassie needs something that is easy on her stomach. I am thinking either ground turkey or chicken with brown rice. Since it is only for one week I don't think I need to ad vitamins and such. Would peas be a good additive? Help! |

| Thanks Em I found this one: 1/2 c. ground meat (lean - any kind) 4 c rice 1 c. vegetables (sweet potatoe, regular potatoe, green beans, carrots and spinach. 1T vegetable oil 2 cloves of garlic Boil all ingredients together in a large pot. I would want to add more meat that 1/2 c though. Any thoughts? |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I would use the recipe you found and omit the garlic, and replace the vegetable oil with olive oil, if possible. I would probably cut back on the rice too, that sounds like a lot of rice for the amount of meat. I'm assuming that's cooked rice, right?

| Thanks Jen I wondered about the garlic. I know they can have a little bit but I agree. I will omit the garlic. Rather than reduce the rice I want to increase the meat. How much would you give a 5 and a 6 lb yorkie. Skeeter would eat til he explodes so I have to limit his. I'm thinking about 1/2 c of the mix twice a day. The shih tzu would get 3/4 c once a day. (she won't eat more often than that.) Oh yes I'll use olive oil too. Good suggestions! Thanks again. |

| I agree. Or you can always boil some rice and then make some chicken soup with chicken breast (just boil in water and add your veges, Romeo likes Peas, carrots cut in v. small pieces, corn). Then at feeding time he can add the boiled rice to the chicken soup? Its up to you...

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | I made this during the dog food scare and my dogs loved it: 2 cups shredded chicken breast 2 lb ground turkey 5 cups cooked brown rice 1 cup shredded zucinni 1 cup shredded carrots 2 cups uncooked oats 1/4 cup of olive oil Mix all ingredience well and bake for 1 hour in a flat pan at 300 degrees Cut into 2 inch cubes and feed 1 to 2 cubes a day. ( the oats help hold it together) I froze it in cubes and defrosted some every day for the next day.

This one sounds good too, and the amounts to feed are probably about what I would give Reno, at 5.5lbs. The recipe probably makes enough to feed them while you're gone. And, would be simple for your hubby to feed. Except with all of the veggies, would it be okay for Cassie?

| Thanks Jeri, That is a great one for the future. I tried the one I found last night with carrots, green beans and a sweet potato. (All fresh) I used 2lb of lean ground turkey and three cups of brown rice. I didn't add any oil or garlic. The big test came when I tried it out on all three little ones. WOW! What a reaction! I expected Skeeter and Cassie to try it and eat if even if they only half-way liked it but Adie is really picky. All three of them acted like they hadn't eaten in a week! SUCCESS. This morning I gave it to Adie and Skeeter and they were jumping around and barking like crazy. A big surprise since Adie usually hides when meal time comes around. So I have a tupperware bowl full of it in the fridge ready to go for DH. Whew! I'm sold on home cooking! When I get back I'm going to try Jeri's recipe on them. Those would keep better. Jen, I think Cassie will be OK with the veggies. She did well last night and I have often given her veggies from my plate at dinner time without incident. Her big problem is with cold food and beef. Even dog treats are starting to bother her now. We never know when she is going to have an incident. It is off and on. She is only nine but the vet says it is age-related. She does well on food for older dogs. Thanks all! |
