| Sammi WILL NOT eat dog food... Hello everyone -- I need some help/suggestions...Sammi WILL NOT eat ANY dog food...Hard or soft...Now she eats ALOT of fruits and veggies during the day, beef, chicken, rice and sometimes fish...I give her nutri-cal every morning, with Hi-Vite drops (a vitamin supplement for dogs and cats with liver, iron, vitamins and minerals.) given to me by my vet... Is there anything else I can give her to supplement what she might not be getting by eating dog food??? I know her not eating any dog food is not the best thing in the world...But I cannot just have her not eating... Many thanks in advance! Fran

| Hey Fran, have you talked to your vet? i was actually having the same problem.. i changed his food from eukanuba to Innova and he after a while he wasnt too enthusitastic (sp) on eating. he only ate the chicken bits i mix in with his kibble. but i force him... i will actually sit there and hand feed him if worse comes to worse. but he seems to be doing better now .. i guess hes getting used to it. look at how spoiled he is .. since innova is a triangle and he was used to the tiny lil pelletes that ekuanuba are i had to cut the innova kibble to make it bite size for him .. if not.. he would not eat.. he would play with it.. WHAT A BRAT!! but i love him. have u mixed in the food he likes with his kibble?

| My Mom is going through the same thing with her 3 year old girl. She primarily eats chicken and other healthy snacks. She has had 4 teeth pulled so far and my Mom is finally getting her to eat some healthy dog food. She has to smash it up and mix it in with some chicken, but Harley licks the plate now! I too smash a few pieces of Innova for my puupies in the breakfast and dinner (they free feed all day), but this garantees me that they eat the amount I want them too, but what I do is: I take the Natural Balance lamb/rice meat roll and I have a very fine cheese grader, so I srinkle some of that fine shreaded meat roll on top of their dry food and they too lick the plates clean! Good Luck! P.S. I read in a thread here YT that you can sprinkle some graded parm cheese on their food to get them to eat too??? |

| Fran, how old is Sammi? How much does she weigh? Can she stand to be without any other food except dog food for a day?? As long as you feed her human foods, you are gonna have problems getting her back on premium dog foods. I would suggest you put kibble in a flat dish and maybe pour something like water from canned tuna(mine LOVE that), or very small amt of chicken breast barely cooked, and moosh it all together with your hands so she cannot pick out any specific piece as being tastier than others. It is important that she eat properly given the problems Yorkies can be prone to such as gum and tooth disease. You might try throwing food on the floor a few pieces at a time as if they were treats. I actually use a different brand or dog food as the treats. I just put that kibble in a treat can and they don't know the difference.. |

| Hi Fran, Buddy doesnt like dog food either, the only one he will eat is 'mini bites' made by Burns (a vet) but then thats only if i mix steak mince or chicken in with it. My vet told me that as long as you supplement with a good quality vitamin and the 'human diet' they eat is a good one ... ie.. not a load of junk, sugar and fat then it does them no damage whatsoever and in the long run is better than most dog foods that you can buy today as a lot of them have some nasty ingredients in them! the only thing he said to watch with a dog on a human diet is their weight, they tend to eat more if its human food!

| Since Yorkies are so prone to tooth and gum problems, you have to give their oral care often and have their teeth checked by your vet every 6 months. That is if you elect to feed human food as their diet. There are books that tell you the specifics that need to be considered when feeding only human foods too. |

| I think Rini made some good suggestions. I sometimes mix in some cottage cheese w/ Stewies' dry food, but he usually doesn't have a problem eating it by itself.

| Thank you all for your input...To answer some questions... Sammi is now 20 months old and 13lbs...My vet is aware of this issue I have with her and gave me the hi-vite drops for that reason...She is not over weight she is very long (19 inches head to tail)... We started on Eukanubna Mini Chunks for puppies...Then switched to Royal Canin for Yorkies which she did like for a little while, but then stopped eating it completely even after mixed with raw/cooked veggies and/or rice...I then tried to give her some wet food...The Wellness foods...Duck with Sweet Potatoes, chicken with SP, etc...She didnt like any of it... I personally do not feel comfortable just leaving dog food down, and if she eats it she eats it and if she dont she dont....I would rather have her eat than not...Even if she just eats human food for her life... I will try the tuna suggestion tonight for sure! And then the cottage cheese if that doesnt work! I mean I personally do not mind if she just ate human food that was good for her, I just do not want her lacking any necessary vitamins... Thank you all again! Fran
