| Usually it is thought to be one once per pound but that may be a high estimate. So an 8 pound dog should drink about 1 cup or a little less a day going on this theory if they get only dry food. Since homecooked and canned are full of moisture, drinking less is normal. Ellie gets homecooked and doesn't drink much at all. If you are concerned and your says your pup is healthy, you can always use a drink and force the issue.

| sammy gets homecooked food everyday and no dry food at all. his urine was looking very yellow, so i decided to add water to his food. i had read that it should be 1 ounce per lb every day. so since i started doing this his urine is clear, but i have to be home to let him out all day, cause he goes quite a bit. do you think this is normal? |

| Try giving him ice cubes to lick. That might help. My girls love to lick ice cubes.

Adding water is fine but he shouldn't be going all day. 4-6 times a day seems average. If he is full grown, he shouldn't be going every hour or anything like that.

| Miko eats homecooked food that is very high in moisture. It's mostly veggies with a vegetarian source of protein added...He pees a lot, but he needs to. My vet told us that he should drink a lot and pee any time he gets the urge, and he should never hold it in. That's part of the reason we have to use puppy pads, so he can have access at all times. We encourage a high moisture intake through high moisture foods and treats. Of course, Miko does have an underlying medical condition...He has liver problems and a history of ammonium urate stones.

I meant to say "If you are concerned and your vet says your pup is healthy, you can always use a syringe and force the issue". Sorry about that.

| no, he doesn't go pee pee every hour, but at least 5 or 6 times a day. i give him 4 ounces in the morning and 4 at supper time. i mix it with his 1/4 cup of food twice a day. he seems to be fine since i started giving him water. he will never drink on his own. i tried to force him with a dropper but he did not like it at all. |

5-6 times a day is acceptable in my opinion since they have small bladders.

| That would be a good intake for him but since his food is full of moisture, he doesn't need that much. 4-6 ounces would probably be okay.
