| I almost killed my dog - with wrong food! Hi everyone. I just got off the phone from the vets and was told my Mickey can come home. I didn't say anything to you guys over the weekend because I didn't want to worry you all. I almost killed him from changing his food. About a month ago I was at my all-breed dog meeting and everyone was sharing what they feed their dogs. A top breeder/shower said to get high protein food is best. But if you raise the protein you must raise the fat. I told them I was using Science Diet puppy and some said they liked Bill Jak, but was so expensive. Well, I wanted to give mine the best I could - so I went to the pet store and started to read all the brands ingredients and choose Nutro Max puppy. I started to wean in the new food mixing it gradually to build up all of Nutro Max. Then I had one puppy -with a sensitive stomach and he started to get diaherra, so I then got Royal Canine 33 puppy and started to wean in that gradually. Well, the one pup stool got better and the other one then had the diaherra - this is when my Mickey 8.5 year old got sick. He started throwing up and crying, breathing heavy, when I tried to pick him up - he cried when I touched his stomach. His stool was also getting soft. So I rushed him to the vets (this was on Friday) and put everyone on rice and hamburger. All the others are okay - hard stool now Well, they kept Mickey over the weekend giving him fluids and an antibotic (just in case). Their tests showed also that it was starting to affect his liver. After all their tests were completed it was caused from a change in diet of too high protein. Go figure! So by trying to give him too much care - what I thought was the best for him and great food - I almost killed him! I don't think it was the Royal Canine. I think it ws the Nutro Max puppy - since protein was higher in that. And now I hear you have to watch out for all the preservatives too. So I am doing all Natural and gentle to their stomach food from now on! I am just so happy he is coming home and okay now. I cried last night when I went to bed, because he sleeps with me everynight -right tight close to my side. All I could do was to talk to him as if he could hear me and try to comfort him that Mama would be able to bring him home soon. He must have been so scared in that place at night. Thank God he is okay now and coming home. |

| Oh I'm so happy that Mickey is coming home and he's going to be all right. It's especially hard when you have a multiple dog household. Just like people not everyone can eat the same thing. So what are you going to feed them all or are they going to be different?...

| Oh, thatīs so tragically, Iīm happy that he is well again. We had the same problem with one of our bitches, sheīs 3 years old and we gave her Royal Canine too. Last year all started: her stool was very soft and that all 2 weeks. The vet checked out all, blood... but didnīt found anything, so he gave us Royal Canine Intestinal. But everything was the same untill Christmas. She became really ill, threw up everything even water and no antibitica helped. Her liver was involved too, I donīt know how high the normal dates are, but herīs were 10 times higher. We really thought she would die. But then I called a friend who is good in Homeopathic things and she brought me three different medicines for my girl and told me to give her honeywater and puppymilk and it worked well. I had to give my bitch a medicine for her liver about a half year. Today she ok again and since that time we only give our dogs in the morning UniQ and we cook for them. |

YT Addict | My vet told me Science diet puppy was good for them and their mother while nursing. Then i feed science diet adult to the adult dogs not pregnant or nursing. Why change if your dog is doing ok. Thats my moral. I listen to my vet not what other people tell me. |

| It's kind of funny that you mention about high protein diet. One of my friend has just started feeding her BC a high protein diet because the low protein diet was causing her dogs to have a chronic urinary infection. I was trying to convience her to change her dog's diet slowly but she said her dogs are okay with the sudden change. I hope her dog stays that way. I'm glad your puppy is okay and is coming home. |

| Thank you guys so much! I almost got on late last night when I was so upset, but did not want to worry you guys. I am just glad he is better and coming home and not some other major illness. I am feeding everyone in the house rice and hamburger with peas for awhile, probably 2 weeks and the go back very very slowly back to Science Diet. Science Diet was great before and they did perfect on it. They didn't even get ill at all from anything else - no colds, flu, nothing. They were so healthy on Science Diet. Teach me to listen to others. I will stick to what I know from know on. I mean I use to be a vet tech (5 whole years). I did everything there. So I should have known better. Thank you again for all your support. I will tell Mickey when he gets home today that you all send your best and kisses from Barvodarling. T. |

| oh, I forgot to tell you guys my vet bill! Now we live in a rural area (kinda) and salaries are not that high - the bill was 345.95. I would have paid though anything to get him well. I would have mortage my house if need be. I am just glad he is better. I love him soooo much! P.S. I am only going back to Science Diet - not because I think it is the best - it is just because I had really good results with it before and this is what they were use to before I started all this changing of foods. I just want to make sure you all knew and not get the wrong idea. T. |

| Topknot~ How scary for you. It is so stressful and frightening when our babies get sick, especially when we are trying so hard to do the best for them. I am glad he is better and, vet bull notwithdstanding, all is almost back to normal for you. I had a question about the hamburger though as I was told never to give my yorkies beef of any kind because it is too hard on their sensitive digestive sytems. I know a lot of people give boiled chicken and rice to get picky yorkies to eat or if their stool is runny, but I never heard of hamburger and rice. Is hamurger okay afterall? |

| Wow.. that is so scary that something like changing their food could cause something like that. I'm glad he's recovering!
