| Q about feeding & getting "fixed" 1st about feeding... how much should a 2 1/2 lb (3 month old) yorkie eat in dry food a day? On the package it only has listed for a 10 pounder and up She is eating Eukenuba btw Also on this topic, is Eukenuba the only way to go? What about Iams? Or Purina One? Any of these close to Eukenuba quality? About getting fixed, at what age is that typically done? And at what age will a female start to have a period? My husband is a bit freaked out about that...lol Thanks! |

| Food & Getting Fixed I feed Nala Purina Puppy Chow, but I too would like to know if that is a good puppy food. She is 11wks. old and about 3.5lbs. I went to the vet Monday and asked them about getting her fixed and they said when she's about 6mths old. She said normally dogs come into heat a little after their 6mths old and she recommended getting her fixed at 6mths. for health reasons. Last edited by kp&nala; 01-05-2005 at 10:43 AM. | On hillspet's (Science Diet) website they suggest that a 2lb puppy less than 4 months should eat 1/2 a cup a day. And if your really not sure on what to feed your puppy your vet can give you great recommendations. My vet gave us a free sample of Science Diet and Eukenuba Puppy food and Ranger didn't really care for the Eukenuba but eats up the Science Diet.

| I don't trust commercial pet foods...the meat they use in there is low grade and contains weird animal parts. I feed Archie Neura 95% Beef, but switch with Neura Chicken, Turkey, Lamb, etc. and for dry food I find Innova is the best. Innova wet food is pretty good, too, but they both have the same ingredients and you get more for your money with the dry food. Anything which has the first ingredient as meat (not byproducts) and little chemicals. I was told when I got him at 5 months that he should eat 1/3 of a can at each feeding, and always leave out dry food. I put out a 1/3 but he never finishes it. Yorkies are really picky eaters, so my vet said it's better to leave out his food instead of giving it to him for 15 minutes and taking it away. Archie eats when he wants and it's usually in the middle of the night. As for the neutering part, he's not neutered yet and he turned 8 months yesterday. We need to get it done ASAP because he's getting very territorial. Archie doesn't really bark, but he's not as friendly with males (human and canine) the same way he used to be. And I don't think it's appropriate to post what he did with a stuffed Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, except to say that either Santa thinks Archie is really really nice or really really naughty... |

| I've been to business Christmas parties where we play "Dirty Santa" but ... Archie, you are a naughty boy!! You and Yoda should be ashamed of yourselves!! The quantity for feeding that our vet recommends for our little "fatty" 4.5 lb. Toto is no more than 1/4 cup total in one day. Since she is at least 1.5 lb. overweight for her tiny bone structure she has her on a diet. We do leave a little dry Royal Canin Yorkshire 28 available to her at all times with lots of water but her morning and evening meals, we try to adhere to the 1/4 cup total recommendation. Also, she has begun to refuse anything with meat in it and only picks out veggies! Dr. Lucy says this is fine so right now we are giving her fresh veggies. We know that the weight problem is caused by lack of exercise but the weather is soooo cold here that there's seldom a day that's fit for walks.

| "Dirty Santa?" At the office party? If you come to the Rock Crusher Bash, will you tell us how to play???? Probably isn't as much fun as eating Peanut Butter Pie, though. We couldn't get our usual organic dog food down here, so we switched to Royal Canin for small breeds. Pogo LOVES it. Higgins doesn't particularly like it. But he'll come around. Since he was sick for a couple of days, we haven't pushed any food on him. Just offered the Royal Canin. He hasn't thrown up again and still seems to feel just as fine and rambunctious as usual. This morning we give him the last antibiotic pill. Bettyeanne......just go home and get the Casita and get down here! It's been in the high 70s for 10 days, with lows in the low 60s. Perfect! Did you hear that we are going to seel our house and go full-time in the Casita? |

I know puppy chow is a premium and not a superpremium dog food. The diference basicaly is in the quality of the products and what parts were used. Both foods, premium and superpremium, are balanced but the superpremiums have extra igredients (vitamins&minerals) and that;s why they are considered the "best" foods! | |

| My vet said feed one of the superpremiums listed above and told me to skip vitamins -- and Dean was underweight at 3.5 lbs (for his structure). Science Diet label says 3/8 to 7/8 cup for 2-5 lb'ers, so I feed at least 1/2 cup a day + to Dean and treat with Marrowbones. Decided to go w/Science Diet instead of Eukanuba b/c I already use it for Hank -- didn't want to have to buy 3 diff. dog foods and a cat food. I don't feed wet food-- makes me want to gag. It reminds me more than the dry of all the "mechanically processed parts" yadda yadda they throw in. And down here in Alabama, we aren't averse to meat. We put pig ankles in our greens, but the smell of wet dog food still makes me wanna gag... off topic though - sorry. Last edited by lucynfred; 01-07-2005 at 01:00 PM. |

| I have Nala on purina puppy chow but the vet gave me a free bag of hills science diet and it seems like that may be better for her. She hasn't had any problems with purina so should i change it since the science diet is healthier? |

| It has all the vitamins they need, and the best part is they digest it better and there's less poop, and what does come out is very compact. Sorry for the vivid description. They also eat less of it, so considering you get more, but they eat more of the Purina, it might be a good switch. Plus, Dean loves it, eats it as treats. Only food I've never seen a dog not turn nose at. |

| good food ok, I've read all the replies and here's my 2cents worth. Look at the label.. Meat protiens should be mentioned first.. Avoid anything with by-products, corn, soy and wheat. We don't even want to think what by-products are and corn is just a cheap filler and soy and wheat could cause allergies.. Bottom line..... look at the ingredients. JMHO |
