Help My yorkie is sick Help my yorkie has been sick for 6 days now. First day little vommiting wouldn't eat vet said bring her in because shes only 3 pounds (6months). I took her in they said it was tonsillitis (no fever) they gave her a shot and sent me home with antibiotic drops twice a day. Next day no better still refusing to eat, she will drink and she lays around and sometimes trembles. Third day I took her back still not herself and not eating. Vet said she emptied out her stomack and now she had an acid stomack? Mixed her up some vitamins and stomach medicine and said to give twice a day and also gave me some Hills canned dog food to mix with water in a syringe and force feed 4 times a day. We have been doing this for 2 days now. She still is not herself she will not come to you or get up unless it is to drink or pee. Help any ideas?

I am sooooo sorry to hear your little one is so sick. I would seek a second opinion ASAP. They are so little. Keep treating her as you have been, but take her to another good vet as soon as possible. Tonsilitis should respond quickly to the antibiotics..... Keep us posted......and welcome to YorkieTalk.

| Welcome! So sorry your baby is sick. I agree with Mary Ellen ... take her to another vet ASAP! Make sure she is drinking because of dehydration and also I would give her vet formula Nutri Cal since she is not eating ... at least she would be getting some nutrients. They are prone to hypoglycemia and she needs sugar which she will get from the Nutri Cal. Please keep us posted.

Like everyone else has posted take her to another Vet. Rudy had tonsillitis a couple of months ago and he got a shot and antibiotic too, but Rudy was feeling better in a day. Maybe the antibiotics are messing up her stomach. Can you look down her throat and see if it is red. Rudy did the same as yours, he wouldn't eat and vomited when I took him to the Vet, he showed me his tonsills and they were huge and red. If the antibiotic is not working her little throat must still hurt. Hope she feels better real soon, they are so sad when they are sick...................Cindy

jbbishop: So sorry to hear your little one isn't doing so well. Is she eating yet? She really needs food or she can become deathly ill and very, very weak. If she isn't drinking water, you could put a bit of sugar in her water and just feed it to her via a spoon even.

Followup on Tessa Thank you all for your thoughts and advice. Although she is not well she is showing some improvement. She is drinking wonderfully. She will not eat her food at all, I am still force feeding her Hills canned food from vet. She will eat some people food my husband has given her honey combs soaked in milk? Before she wouldn't even eat this but starting yesterday she is nibbling but only on people food. I want her to go back to her puppy food. I will keep you all posted... again thanks.

Aha! She's decided people food is better and she is going to stick with it! (I remember when I had my tonsils out waaaaaaaaay back in the dark ages when they took every kid's tonsils out, we got to eat ice cream for a week and I loved it!) Sounds like she's MUCH better and I glad to hear it! You'll get her back on puppy food gradually.........

SO glad that she's better but once she's really recovered you're probably going to have to be very hard and refuse her anything except her own food, they are not stupid these yorkies ....!!

| "they are not stupid these yorkies ....!!" ... Ana is absolutely right!! Once they have "people" food they usually refuse their food altogether! Toto did that and piled on the weight which got us a "chewing out" from Dr. Lucy! She said that it's absolutely true ... if they get hungry, they WILL eat their food. We just have to be "tough" about it. It's true, but awfully hard. She has now begun to eat vegetables and absolutely no meat ... she wants those vegetables cooked fresh too! So, I set aside a day to boil potatoes, baby carrots, bake sweet potato, etc. I also do this with veggie pasta, spagetti noodles, etc. ... I just take hers out before I add any seasoning] ... this is one of her faves! I chop them up and freeze them on a cookie sheet in a single layer and then store them in freezer zip loc bags ... when it's time for her to eat, I just take out what she will eat ... cover it in a little glass dish with saran wrap ... zap it in the wave for about 20-25 seconds ... sprinkle a little parm on it and she licks her dish clean!! When she was eating before and gaining weight, I was also cooking her meats like ground turkey breast, chicken tenders, etc. ... no more ... I will do the veggies because Dr. Lucy says it's OK, but if the day comes when she begins to refuse her veggies and pasta ... tough, it will be back to the Natural Balance!!! Like I have said before ... "she's a tad spoiled"!!

Oh Bettye you have just helped me more than you know!! Gypsy Rose is on a diet and I'm running out of idea plus my girl is not amused either! She ate puppy food you see when we had Gizzie (ok, laziness on my part, easier to give Gyps the same rather than risk Gizz eating something not on her pup diet sheet and have her ill!). Well of course it is loaded in calories and those calories are to be seen all aroung Gyp's middle!! (Not sure what happened to MY middle?!!). Now I can try what you suggest, may have to contact you for advice though if that's ok?!! jibbishop - sorry didn't mean to hijack your post!! How is your little one doing now?

If your pup has not had a bile acid test please ask your vet to do one. It is a blood test where the blood is drawn after a 12 hour fast, and then the dog is fed and it is drawn again about 2 hours later. This test will tell you if there is any problem with the liver, which could also have some of the symptoms you have talked about. From what you have said about your vet I would look for another one and inquire if they are experienced with toy dogs. Treating toy dogs is a lot different than treating large dogs. Even with surgery you need to use an anesthetic that is safe for toy dogs. There have been times when a toy dog has been put under for surgery and never woke up again. It is very important that you have a vet that knows about toy dogs.

Tessa is now almost 1 and is very very sick Tessa has been sick on and off since I first posted when she was 3 months old. It seems to have always cycled - she would get sick throw up, refuse to eat, shake and stay in bed then I would syringe feed her a/d diet and in several days she would turn around and be her old self and seemingly healthy. Then about every 4 weeks she would do it all over again. This has been for the last 10 months. This time she is very sick and has been for 2 weeks. I am still forcing a/d diet. She is in the bed all day and looks as if she could die at any moment. Although she will get up when we eat and sit under the table. The vet has run a cbc and chemistry on her and says she has ruled out liver shunt because her liver levels are all perfectly normal. Her white count was down a little but they said that was from being so sick. We made an appointment at the specialist for 6/21 and in the meantime our vet called and said she had been doing some research and thought she might have adison's disease and called lab to check her cortisol level. In the meantime I looked up addison's and she had all the same symptoms so we were sure we had finally found it. Well her cortisol came back and it was high not low. They say high shows cushings disease. The problem with this is that she doesn't have signs of cushings disease and this is usually found in older dogs. They say even though she has ll the symptoms of addisons that it cant be ti because of her cortisol level being high. Now they are saying they think it could be a cortisol producing tumor and that it would require alot more tests and an iffy surgery????? Please help has anyone heard of any stories like mine? I want to save my baby but money is becoming an issue at this point. I dont know how much testing/surgery we should put her through.
