Licking paws...allergies to what?? Hi, I'm new...hello to all Yorkie lovers! I have a 3 yr old female, Cocoa . She licks her paws constantly. The vet gave her tavist for allergies. She also get pimples(pussy ones, gross) on her belly if i don't keep up with the tavist. Does anyone know what the allergy might be to? I give her fa little fresh chicken or beef in her food(Science diet). I am changing over from Nutro. She licks at night before bed and in the AM. Any experience with this, please share. We are off to the vet again this week. Thanks!

I catch TJ doing the same thing sometimes. I am going to ask the VET when I go on 7/8. Sometimes there is a piece of food stuck (his hair really needs to be cut) so I do know that sometimes he is searching for that, but other times I don't know why??? I have been giving them cherrios as rewards for peeing on the wee wee pads and someone in another thread that they contain corn and alot of Yorkies are allergic to corn. Both TJ and Roxy are scratching like crazy so maybe in my case there are allergic to corn and the cherrios are bad for them (very sad, b/c they LOVE them). I'll let ya know what my VET says...

It could be anything that they are allergic too. I would try switching foods first. I have a dog that is allergic to beef. Just a suggestion.

First of all let me welcome you to our community. We had this discussion last week, Lexie GIrl is having semilar problems. I know what you are going through as well, I went through it.Here was my response last week. I just went through this nightmare not to long ago. Nina & Coby had the same exact symptoms. It was driving me insane. The vet told me it was common for yorkies to have allergies. I was just trying to pin point what was triggering the allergies. He told me to give them Benadryl. First mistake! Nina had a really bad reaction to it. She had the shakes, heavy panting, well never again. Ichanged there food to Solid Gold lamb and rice, it helped a little bit but not enough. I went ahead and started to cook home mademeals which they loved, but not much of a change. Me just going crazy and researching I came across this web site for natural medicines for animals. It has done wonders. It's been less than 4 weeks and I can honestly say Coby does not scratch anymore, Nina I have caught licking her paws just on a few occasions at night, But it's been when we have come back home from a walk. When I placed my order they told me to give it at least 6 weeks, I am so happy and relieved that it took less time to kick in. Please check into this, it's made my life,Nina & Coby's much happier. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to e-mail me. I'll be more than happy to answer any questions anybody might have. http://www.carefreepet.com/index.html

Many dogs have corn allergies. Check your dog food and find one with no corn. it is easy enough to do these days I never feed a dog food with any corn for that reason.Good luck, i hope you find out the reason.

It most likely would be food allergies, grass allergies, or environmental (toxins). Some people say to never use products like "carpet fresh" or other such chemicals on carpets and to use steam cleaning.

Thanks to all of your advice, Cocoa is not licking anymore! I took her off chicken and beef. I'm just adding a little roast turkey form the deli to her food ( science diet and Nutro) I'm also using Vet's choice skin and coat conditionioner in her food, it's an oil. That has helped her belly sores! Since i first posted she hasn't licked! It's working. she's so content now and so am I. Today she didn't even need her tavist! I'm so happy! Thanks everyone, you are the best!

Hi, I am new ... this is my second day on this website. I have a 6 pound boy yorkie named Sammy. Your quote caught my eye because I am having similar problems with Sammy. He has bumps on his back that eventually get this crusty stuff on them. I took him to a vet and they put him on prednizone/benadryl pills and antibiotics. It clears up some and then comes back. He scratches his chin constantly and licks his paws. I have him on Science Diet (sensative skin). The only treats he gets are carrots, saltine crackers, and Canine Carry Outs Bac'n Bites. All of these things he has had for years and yet these bumps just came up in March (we were living in Maine at the time and nothing was blooming outside). Can you help?

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | To add to this - many dogs are a little obsessive/compulsive - sometimes paw licking is just that - a habit - we had a cocker that did that and it was only cause she LIKED to do it - The cocker I have now, Tessa....does this and sneaks a few nibbles on her nails - she actually CHEWS her nails but tries to hide it - it's pretty funny - I have to file them cause she makes them jagged. |

More concerned with bumps Hi, thanks for responding. I am not as concerned with Sammy licking his paws as I am with all of the bumps on his back that end up with a thick build up on them. As I have said I have taken him to the vet twice and all they do is drug him up on benadryl/prednizone but it does solve the problem. The benadryl just makes him sleep all of the time and he looses all his personality. The vet also gave me medicated shampoo but again it doesn't resolve anthing ... the bumps just come back. We just moved to Texas 2 weeks ago and I don't know a vet here to take him to. I trust what other yorkie owners have to say more than vets at this point!

It sounds like what you are dealing with is a contact allergy. He may have a secondary skin infection, that needs to be treated with antibiotics, the Maleseb shampoo will help but won't cure the entire problem. (I assume that is the shampoo he is on). The next vet visit I think I would ask them about the possibility of a bacterial skin infection. good luck, skin issues are always so frustrating!
