when do i visit the vet for the first time?

Hi guys,

I've been bad and I haven't looked around for a reputable vet yet. But I'm getting my first yorkie puppy on Sunday (YAYEE!). How soon after I get him should I bring him to my vet of choice?

Most breeders give you so long after you buy the puppy to take it to your vet and get the puppy checked out. You should take it to a vet within the first couple days for a good check up and any vaccinations if needed. Depending on your vet, your puppy will need 3-4 rounds of vaccinations starting between 6-8 weeks....going 3-4 weeks in between each round of shots. Some vets do 6-9-12 weeks, some do 6-9-12-16 weeks, some do 8-12-16 weeks...just depends on your vet.

MyFairLacy, approximately how much do vaccinations cost, and how often do our dogs need to be vaccinated? Or are they more like a one-time deal?

Within the first week... in my breeders contract it gave a certain time frame for getting the puppy checked by a vet.

You should bring your pup within the first few days. Usually the breeder will tell you how much time you have.

I say the first day or two because if it has a serious health issue, you don't want to get attached.

Shots:
Rabies is giving usually between four months and a year. I would not attempt it in a Yorkie until atleast six months but laws in your state might make that impossible. I believe it is given one year after the first one again. Then it is given annually or every three years depending on your state. The one year and three years shots are the same and it isn't necessary every year unless your state makes you.
Bordatella is kennel cough. It is given every six months to a year. There are two types, intranasal and injectable. You start this at puppy age and some don't give it at all. I do not give it to my Yorkie and she has never gotten kennel cough. If she were to get it though, it could turn to pneumonia. It is your choice but some vets make you give it if your dog is going to be hospitalized.
Lyme diease and giardia depend on if you want to and your area. I have never and will never give them.
DHPP (distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza) is given when MyFairLacy said above. I would only give it three times and start at eight weeks though. Then it is given one year later and it varies after that. Some vets do it annually (which is silly), some do every three years, some do titers and only do it when necessary. You will have to talk to your vet about it. If you ever see an "L" in the DHPP, it is leptosporosis and should only be given to Yorkies if the disease is a huge problem in your area or if you live on a farm. The shot is very dangerous for Yorkies. If you see a "C" in the DHPP, that is coronavirus and, in my opinion, it should never be given.

Shot are between $12 and $25 each usually. Then you have to buy your dog's license.
