| Bit of a problem here with food. Hello everyone, I have a bit of a problem here. I have been feeding Charlie 2/3 of a cup of Nutro Ultra puppy food daily (1/3 in the morning, 1/3 at around 4PM) which has been great. He's almost a 11 months old now, so I switched to Nutro Ultra adult dog food BUT like a moron, I forgot that you're typically supposed to combine foods until they get used to the new stuff. Well, I threw away the remaining puppy food without thinking and just fed him all adult food for his last three meals. He's been really gassy (never was before) and after he goes poop on his pad (this is gross) he's moving it all around the kitchen leaving marks where ever it goes. I think because its not the same consistency. His poop is/was solid with the puppy food. Now its much softer and has a much stronger odor. I feel bad, cause its my fault. Let me be clear about that. I cant believe that combining the foods escaped me, but it did. Now I'm wondering what to do. I was going to go buy a small bag of the puppy food to mix. Do you think I have to? Will the new food get better or acclimate to his system soon if I just keep giving it to him? Also, why would he be moving his poop around all over?!?! Thanks so much. -Danny |

| I have change dog food in the past and they always pick out the one they like better . But if your yorkie have a sensitive stomack I would buy a small bag and mix it with the new food, or you can ask for a sample bags so you don't have to buy a new bag.If you get a new bag you can always donate the food to a local rescue or spca |

| If I were you I would stop the food altogether. Boil some chicken (as long as your dog does well on chicken and isn't allergic) and white rice. Give that for a day or two until the poop is back to normal and then add the adult food in gradually. You could just go get another bag of puppy food if you're more comfortable with that. Plain yogurt with active cultures mixed with banana is also good for settling stomachs.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hmmm...I'm surprised he had this strong of a reaction since you stayed within brand lines. It doesn't sound like diarrhea, so I wouldn't stop the food. It is just mushy, right? If that's the case, stick with it since you've already started the transition - you could add some canned pumpkin to the kibble (this helps w/ either constipation or diarrhea) and/or yogurt. He should firm up within a day or so unless something else is going on OR unless he is allergic to something in the food. You could also add some boiled chicken or whitefish (fish would be best) to the kibble -or- alternate the kibble meals w/ a homecooked meal. Hang in there, it'll be okay! If it does head toward actual diarrhea, then you'll need to make a choice as to whether this food is a good one for him.

| Thanks everyone for your comments... I'll see how he does tonight before deciding to mix his food again, or do the yogurt trick. To answer Wylie's Mom's question about Diarhhea, it's not. It's just much softer, which really makes an unpleasant mess when he moves it around. Thanks again everyone. |
