Will not eat Spike will be 12 weeks old on Nov. 10th. Ok, I haven't had a puppy since I was a little kid. And I never have had a small dog nor a toy breed. So, I am wondering how is their normal behavior at this age? Also, when we first got him he was hypoglycemic and had coccidia. Well, now he will not eat on his own. He did everyonce in a while, but now he is just not interested. Any body have any suggestions or ideas?

yikes. So sorry. I can't help you there. Bella came to me eating anything and everything in site. You will find answers here I am sure! Good luck with your baby! I did read yorkies are social eaters or communal eaters. they dont like eating alone.

| i don't know about the "communal" eater part, i only have one Yorkie and she eats when im not home. What food is your yorkie on? bc they are picky eaters, i had a similar problem with mine, she disliked the food that the breeder had her on... i switched her to Royal Canin yorkie #28 and she loves it, i know from other owners that also feed this food to their pups that it generally gets a good response... hope this helps!!

Well since, he has been assist fed we have been feeding him what the vet gave us. Some A/D canned food. We have tried what the pet store had, another brand from the store that is recommended for Yorkies. What my mother-in-law feeds her yorkie pups. He did eat some by himself everyonce in awhile, but he wont eat a full meal on his own. And when I ;eave food out for him, he just sleeps. So he doesn't see or act interested in the food. He would rather sleep.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Well, first, how is his weight holding? It's important to continually assess that at his age. Are his stools okay? So, are you "hand feeding" him - is that what you mean by "assist"? That A/D is kinda strange food - Marcel ate one dose of it after/during his giardia and then nothing. Twelve weeks is still very young, so he should be eating 3-4 times a day yet. I'd recommend a really high quality food due to his history, some great ones are: Canidae All Life Stages, Innova, Wellness, California Natural, Evangers, Orijen. These foods are available at better pet stores, feed stores, and online. They are not much more expensive, but the ingredients are MUCH better - and they often taste better. If he's leaving food behind, maybe he just ate enough - what portions are you giving?

Will he eat solid food, or does it have to be wet food? Also are you giving him nutri cal about 3 times a day?

By assist feeding him, I mean with a syringe. We are feeding him A/D because it is the only thing we can get through it. He is 2.5 lbs. at almost 3 months old. We leave him all sorts of different foods out at all times. Yes, we are giving nutri-cal three times daily. He has eaten a few pieces of kibbles by himself, but when we did eat on his own he ate mainly wet food with a tad milk or gatorade in it. He doesnt even want to lick the nutrical off our fingers. But may I remind you, he has not been in our home for more than a week. He has been at the vets or hospital longer than our house. We feed him about 1 syringe full to 1.5 within 3-4 hours a day. He does not have diahrea anymore, but it is a formed wet poo. I belive it to be from the wet food. Also, he pees regularly and everything with out much water intake as well.

Mine is 13 weeks, and there is food down all the time for her..I give her blackwood(dry)puppy food. she plays a lot, but also sleeps a lot..I wouldn't be giving him too many different foods, it can really upset their stomaches..find a good puppy food and stick with it...maybe mix 1 teaspoon of cottage cheese in with it to get him to eat, or a little bit of grated cheese..you don't want to give them much human food, but, sometimes that, or a little boiled chicken mixed in with their food gets them eating(white meat only as dark meat is too rich and tears up their stomaches)..

How much should he be playing? He sleeps mainly through the night in his crate then sleeps alot during the day. He only plays a bit and its a short bit. But I remember my mother-in-laws Yorkie pups. They did the same thing, sleep a ton, until they were about 4 -5 months.

Oh yeah, I get on the floor and run around throw balls along with his other toys. But during the day since he needs 24hr monitoring I have to take him to work, so its kinda hard. he just chews on his rawhide and other things for a bit, then sleeps.

Yeah, Spike was born supposedly Aug. 10. But you know how them pet stores are. Man, my b-day is July 30th. Pretty close! You know its funny you say that, he was just up for about an hour here at the office, sniffing, chewing, walking around. Now he is sound a sleep..haha. Yes, we know he is a baby, but it is hard for our kids to get them to understand. They just want to play play play. I guess its because my mother-in-laws are a couple months older than Spike and they run around like crazy dogs. But im sure he will sooner or later.

I got Elphaba at almost 9 weeks and she would not eat the food the breeder gave me which was a mix of like 4 dry foods and then the breeder had me adding in a little moist. When she started to go into Hypoglycemic shock I forced some nutrical puppy in her mouth. I had to cover my finger, and then pry open her mouth and shove it in there - not fun. But she perked back up almost immediately and started to express some interest in food. That said, she seemed not too crazy about the food in general. As I started mixing in the food I wanted to give her (royal canin indoor puppy) I noticed she was ONLY eating the new food. So I just pulled the old stuff and went to my new stuff on the 2nd or 3rd day. Occasionally she still doesn't eat much but its gotten better. If I don't think she has eaten enough then she gets a dab of Nutrical off my finger which she takes eagerly now. Last edited by shelbell77; 11-01-2007 at 10:39 AM.
