| Kennel Cough--Should I be worried?? Sorry this is long but I am worried!! Okay, so a neighbor a few streets down just got another yorkie. This is her second one from a pet store and the first time she wanted to bring her boy over to see Lily, I said no way until he gets his shots and what not. Well, I was outside and who comes walking by...yup, the neighbor, her male yorkie and her new one. I can't be rude and run in the house so right as I am going to pick Lily up, her new little girl comes over and starts sniffing and trying to play. I pick Lily up anyway because the male is really aggressive and my neighbor goes on to tell me that the new Yorkie has kennel cough and it's 'really disgusting' and blah blah. A minute later I say goodbye and now I am freaking out!!! Lily is so healthy, has all of her shots, etc. I am just worried that now she will get kennel cough. Could it happen even though she was only exposed for a few minutes?? The girl didn't tell me until the very end, otherwise I wouldn't have even been out there talking to her!!! What should I do???

| I believe any amount of time is long enough. Is your Yorkie vaccinated for bordetella? That could help.

| No, she has all of her other shots but we didn't do bordetella. Now I don't know why we didn't but I am still so mad at myself.

| Well stuff happens. Everything could be just fine. Mine has never been and will never be vaccinated for it either. It just might have helped in this case. That's all. Run next time you see your neighbor.

| Kennel cough is very, very contagious, and even the vaccine only protects against about half of the strains out there. It is well worth being concerned about. If I were you with irresponsible neighbors running around, I'd get my dog vaccinated just to cover as many bases as I could.

| Kennel Cough is very contagious....Since my show dogs are traveling and exposed to alot of situations, I give my show dogs Intra Trak III every 6 months....Once it is contracted it will run through all your dogs and takes approximately 6 weeks to run it's course....

Is she is on meds....if not taken care of it can turn into pneumonia.....The kennel cough prevention med can be administered nasally.

| So should I call the vet and see if they can do anything? How long before symptoms start to occur? She is acting fine now.
