| sounds like hair balls I need your all help. For the last couple of days Deiter has been hacking, snorting. Sounds like a cat with a hair ball. What could this be. Sometimes he does it when we are playing, walking, or just laying down. He eats fine, sleeps, plays. I don't know what it is or why. My Boyfriend says this is normal for a Yorkie. I told him that I never read anything on that. Please help

| Poor Deiter! Does it sound like reverse sneezing or collapsed trachea noises? Actually Coby has been softly coughing/snorting a little more lately. So I've been more careful about not putting a collar on him as much (harness only) to make sure I don't agitate his throat at all. I sort of wondered if he was having a touch of allergies.

| It can possibly be Bordetella, also known as Kennel Cough. Ariel caught it the second week we had her, and she passed it on to my older dog. Both dogs were coughing, and sounded exactly as you described it ~ like they had a hair ball in their throat, and wanted to cough it out. I took them to the vet, and they both received antibiotics for it. Belle got over it pretty quickly, and barely needed the antibiotics. It took Ariel 2-2.5 weeks to get through it. I hope he feels better soon. Last edited by TurtleDove; 10-16-2007 at 08:46 PM. |

| When we took them to the vet, they gave us a sheet with information about Kennel Cough. The sheet said it is VERY contagious and is air borne. |

Glad it's only allergies (although they can be frustrating too!) Poor Deiter.

| Myboy, How is your little yorkie doing? I haven't visited this forum in a while and was reading over the post that come up when you do a search on collapsed trachea. My baby, LittleFoot had been coughing and gagging when he would run, when he got up in the mornings and anytime he got excited. He did this for a few weeks and I thought it was allergies so I was giving him Benadryl twice a day and there was no change. Then I took him to the vet. The vet checked him, no fever, ears were fine, but throat was a little swollen. He told me that what I was describing was probably not anything to worry about "Probably just allergies". I was insistent, so they did an x-ray. My vet is a good vet, I trust him, but too many times I think they are trying to save you money with unnecessary test. I can understand that. Well, he has a "slightly" collapsed trachea and enlarged heart. His throat is swollen from all irriation of the coughing. I was horrified, he will be 6 years old this December. The doc put him on antibotics and steriods. He's finished his antibiotics and down to a half tab every otherday on the steriods. We have to focus on his heart right now. I tell you this so that if you even think somethings not right, insist they check anyway. What can it hurt? Gayla |

| Deiter is doing great. He hasn't been doing any of that since they are out of the fields. But he is feeling much better. Thanks for asking.

| I came on here looking for this same topic because my lil boy is doing the same thing. Besides the hacking and trying to get "something up" he is a regular pup, he plays, rolls all ove,r jumps around in excitement, eating, and eating. He can just be there looking at me and it seems like he is trying to hack up a fur ball, and I look in his throat when he does this but there is nothing there? What is this? I took him to the Vet his 2nd day home just for a regular check up, and I noticed that day he had a runny nose and it is still runny. The Vet said that he "might" have caught Kennel Cough, but there is no sign of infection or color in his discharge, only clear runny nose, and he sometimes sneezes a lil and it ends up on my face, cause I am always in his face..lol! I love him and have just about had it with this. My lil girl hasn't had any of these symptoms at all, and that makes me wonder what could it be? I looked up "collapsing Trachea, and of course its suppose to be in adult pups, and mine are onlyfourteen wks. They have an appointment on the twenty fifth of this month. Hopefully the Vet will have more to say. |
