Good Evening, Ellie has a yeast infection in her ears an couple months ago which cleared up with meds. Tonight I noticed blood in one of her ears (the other one is completely normal). This is not from deep in but could be a bite. She is really scratching and the vet's office won't say if it's okay to use Neosporin or Cortizone because they want her to be seen. The only reason Ellie goes there is for the vet not the front desk people. I have read other people use Neosporin for their Yorkies but is it safe and is cortizone safe? I don't think we can stop her from licking it because she pulls any socks off of her paws. I don't think she needs to be seen if its just a bite. Any suggestions? Thank You

Sorry for the typo. I said has a yeast infection and meant had a yeast infection.

Neosporin is fine to use on cuts and scrapes. Is she scratching because she has an infection and that's what causes the blood, OR is there a bump or bite mark visible? is the rest of the ear red and look like its bothering her?

if its just a scratch or whatnot on her ear then by all means put some neosporin on it. It won't hurt.

Thanks Kalina. I am not sure if there is a bump there but the ear is not as white as the other one. I think it is just from her scratching so much.

I suggest you take your dog in if there is any blood in the ear. Unless you can definitly say she has scratched it raw.
If she is really scratching it she needs a culture done on her ear to make sure she does not have an infection again anyway.

That is for like staph and strep infections.This may sound funny to you but get some good old fashion listerine antiseptic mouthwash-ya I know the yucky golden colored listerine.

It will kill yeast infection-maybe soak qtip in it and clean ear canal.
I would still insist Doc treat her and yeast infection shouldn't reoccur did he get it all cleaned up the first time for sure?

Of course she could have scratched self with her nails and another infection could have set in if she excoriated her skin.

it with peroxide and alcohol. She might have ear mites. Use mineral oil the next day a drop let it dry the next day mites will be dead and dog will not be pawing at her ear.

Over the counter cortizone cream comes in different strengths. I would use the lower one. Cortizone can cause irritation to sensitive skin.
There is usually 0.5 and 1.0. You want 0.5%
