Yorkie black sticky discharge around vagina-MY DOG IS SCOOTING OUT OF CONTROL... I am trying to find someone who has experienced their yorkie having a sticky tar-like discharge on the vagina. The hair adheres and when i remove and clean my little girl she then scoots out of control. we have recently had urine tests to discover crystals. Vet says she could be producing kidney stones... we may do xrays but not sure if we will find anything. vet suggested putting cranberry juice in her water. (mixing 1/8 cup per 1 cup water) or today i picked up cranberry pills. 1/4 pill as she is just 6 lbs. i gave it to her tonight for the first time so we'll see if this helps. i am stumped becasue the vet doesn't give me clear answers... my dog has trachea collapse when we take a visit to the vet and i am just so stressed worrying about her. i have put neos. ointment on her and that helps dissolve this tar-like substance forming on her private area. we are currently in the process of switching vets. Now she will scoot when it is time to empty her anal glands... but she will scoot also when i try to clean her vagina area. i am sorry that i don't have a picture of my girls posted just yet. :-( i just joined a few minutes ago and i am gosh....so desperate. anyone... ever experience this with their yorkie or has any advice. please let me know...

| I don't have personal experience with this, but I Googled it. That discharge could be a sign of infection. Insist on a culture of the discharge. Here is just one type of infection: http://www.beaglesunlimited.com/beag...rucellosis.htm

| I'm not sure about the discharge, I'm sorry I can't help you with that, but it sounds scary!! As far as the stones, I have lots of experience with stones...You need to have your vet send the crystals/stones to a lab to find out what kind they are. This is extremely important, as treatment for different stones is completely different. Cranberry juice is not necessarily good for all types of stones. A blockage could occur, and your girl could be in a worse condition. I would also have the vet do an X-ray AND an ultrasound as some stones don't show up on x-rays and only show up on ultrasounds...Depending on the types of stones, she may need surgery because some stones do not dissolve regardless of diet change... Some stones do... It sounds like you may need another vet if he/she is not willing to do these vital tests...

t/y thanks for responding! I will check out what you sent. If you would like to know more about our little Samie... here is where we are at... The vet told me today that some dogs produce mucous and this could be what this tar-like discharge is. She wants us to try adding cranberry juice in her water to see if this would help maybe lower the ph in her urine... ? in the meantime i am getting ready to make a vet replacement :-) just getting nowhere with this and don't know what else to do. i suggested maybe xrays and maybe possible blockage but the vet says if there was blockage (stones in the urinary trach) that she would stop urinating. and she still is urinating. so?? tonight i gave her her first cranberry pill. we discussed that we could do pill or juice. i opted for the pill. so again tonight she starting scooting so i put some neos. ointment on her. she has stopped scooting but still panting some. i keep distacting her by giving her icecubes (that i first run under water for a minute or so to shrink them down) :-) she can't be scooting tonight because of her anal glands being full????? i mean she was just at the vet last Friday and she has been scooting ever since. BUT...they also removed all of the tar like substance that had formed around her vagina while we were there. she scooted immediately before we even left the vet. mind you,,, there was nothing to remove from her anal glands. i had got all of it when i had done it. but sometimes i just can't get all of it. and once a month i let the vet do it. Also whenever i had cleaned her lightly with a wash cloth and warm water on her vagina she would scoot immediately. its really mind boggling to say the least? we switched her food 3 mos ago to a purina spec diet NF kidney control formula (per the vets request) and recently started her on Chlorpheniramine 2 mg- twice a day for her allergies.. we were giving it to her with the canned NF food but it seemed that her anal glands were needing to be emptied in like 2 wks or less as opposed to maybe once a month when i gave her a bath. the vet today seemed to tell me that the canned food had nothing to do with her anal glands filling quicker. regardless we discontinued giving that to her. and it was so hard because she just LOVED this canned food. OMG! loved it! so anyway-i told the vet that the sticky (whatever it is)?? adheres to her vagina and then her hair around it is stuck and matted together on her vagina--it seems to create a barrier and she scoots less. Then when i trim the hair and remove the debris she scoots more. so i don't know what to think anymore? the vet said to keep removing the debris becasue it could harbor bacteria. I did notice that before we introduced the canned NF food she would have a drier substance-almost dry/gritty. in the same area but instead of black it was a like gold/brownish gritty/drier...almost like dust instead of tar like. -i know this sounds crazy :-) but it was kind of like corn dust. the dry food has a lot of corn meal in it.. so it makes sense to me especially since her food is filtered though her kidneys... so here we are- she finally is asleep right next to me. i almost tried to see if her anal glands maybe were full again. this evening..And she hates when i empty her anal glands. half the time i have to do it more than once because she is just so teeny weeny that i have a hard time finding them. and even once i do find a little to clean out -they are barely full. yet it stops the scooting. at least for a few days. but like i said- i really don't think her anal glands are the problem. it's this substance around her vagina. i am hoping she will let me sleep thorugh the night becasue God only knows...she has woke me up scooting in agony at times and then the breathing starts... and then the coughing. she also suffers trachea collapse if she get over heated, excited or stressed. the allergy med helps with that... since she can breath a little better. we can't put her on anything stronger for her allergies since they contain steroids.. and steroids impact the kidneys... it's such a vicous cycle we have here. i don't know what to do. this vet we go to is quick getting us in and getting her taken care of since her allergies and excitement effect her trachea collapsing and we literally can be at the vet for 15 min tops or else we risk losing her. (almost happened last year) once we got her home and calmed her down she was better. (very scary for me to say the least) but i want to switch to a new vet we found and i am so scared. the last time we tried a different vet she gave samie something to calm her and it made her so bad that i don't know how she made it through that. she could not breath and all and she was gasping in my lap the whole way home in the car. i thought she would be a goner by the time we made it home. but i am not happy with this vet. i don't think she knows what is wrong with our little dog???? our other yorkie is having her teeth cleaned at the new vet next week (if i don't chicken out and cancel the appt :-) i am just really nervous about them doing this since they have to put her under anesteshia. i want to bring samie to the new place but we plan to meet with the new vet and let them know what is going on with samie in much detail before i risk taking her there. don't want another bad experience like last year. i am off to put my weary body/mind to sleep for the night. anddddd i am babbling away... :-) thanks for reading if you made it this far :-) i just don't know what else to do for her. a year of worrying, wondering, thinking she will be okay... oh the stress. she is going to give me an ulcer the way i worry about her. :-)

the vet has told me that she is not a good candidate for surgery because of her trachea issues. you can read more of what i posted. it's quite long. but gosh i appreciate your response. i am so worried about her. i am worried because i gave her a small 1/4 amount of the cranberry pill tonight. my vet was so firm with me today.. she says with her trachea issues we are blessed she has made it this long. i will write more- i am counting hours of sleep i can get for the night before morning is here and i have to work early. thank you so much!!! i appreciate all of your info very much!

Friday 6/15/07 welll.... Samie let me sleep through the night. Her panting/breathing not any better. I get up to feed both of them and give them water. i am just getting ready to head out the door for work and here we go again... samie is scooting like mad. what to do?? what to do? ok so i am now cleaning her anal glands...not a thing to clean out. nothing at all. she scoots for a second or so immediatey afterwards and then she goes to lay down on her blanket. my husband stayed home with her all day (he had a dead battery/car this morning so he worked from home) which was great because i was so... worried about leaving her alone all day. All day long with her and he says that she did not scoot even one time. ok... so YES i am relieved... BUT- this will happen again- it's just not over. I wish it was but it just is not. This has been going on for 1 year as of June 1st. i can't imagine what i did to her this morning ?? there was not anything to empty? all i know is for the moment she is not scooting.... and i am not attemting to mess with the discharge today because it will make her scoot if i clean it off. i am so glad i found this site- i appreciate the responses and prayers more than you can imagine. xoxoxo....

Poor little Samie! I think it is a good idea to change the Vet. Mitzi has such a discharge once in a while and my vet gave me "animax ointment" to apply and even put some in her vagina. IMO it is not necessary to clean her anal glands that often and with all that cleaning and washing off the discharge her skin is probably irritated and itches or hurts. Also she might have an infection in her vagina and that itches too (as we all know...) Another thing is that she might be allergic to corn and corn products. A lot of dogs are. Best thing is to feed her raw meat or slightly cooked meat with just a tiny bit of oatmeal and to give her a raw oxtail bone to chew on. Mitzi had problems with her skin for almost 9 years and we tried every dog food we could find. Now since we switched to raw and home cooked her skin cleared up, she scoots no more and she is a healthy happy dog. I hope you find help really soon and give your babie kisses from Mitzi!

Poor mommie. I agree with Mitzi's Mom that you probably don't need to empty Samies anal glands so much. I've had dogs all my adult life and only had one that had to have its glands expressed ocassionally. Not all dogs need to have that done. Some are able to manage quite well on their own. I would just let the warm water of her bath clean the area when you bathe her and also keep the hair in that area really short. She may even enjoy sitting in the sink in warm water for a few minutes. Take her to the groomer if you need help cutting the hair but I think it will really help her to not have the area disturbed so often. Make sure she is getting plenty of water. I'm sure you are. I hope your baby gets better soon. Tink is sad that Samie is so miserable and sends her some hugs and good wishes.

Oh Hun, I have to agree with everyone else, that you might be doing more harm than good. I think you should stop expressing the anal glads, I think you should stop trimming her hair around her pee area. She probably has very sensitive skin and it must be irratated. I am not sure what food you are feeding now, but if it has Corn (corn in any type of text) and By-Products (in any form of text) I would STOP it immediatly. Raw food diet is what I feed my 2. Either www.naturesvariety.com or www.morigins.com If you must feed a Dry or Wet, try www.naturalbalance.com - they have a Duck and Potato flavor, which I do believe is very good for allergies and sensitive issues. Also, www.canidae.com is a very good dogo food. I also feed my 2 - Dried Cranberries and Dried Blueberries everyday. They get about 3-4 of each. I buy them at Trader Joes or Costco (Human Food). I also feed 1/2 teaspoon of Organic Low Fat Stonyfield Yogurt and I sprinkle some extra Probiotics that I bought from the fridge section in The Vitamin Shoppe. I also feed 1/2 teaspoon of Orgainc Extra Virgin Coconut Oil. All the things I have mentioned, you can do a google search and find lots of stuff relating to overall health benefits. Relating to your girl, my female in the past would have 'scooting' if I too trimmed her hairs too short, or if the buzzer was too close and gave her 'razor burn'. She too gets a small build up of 'blackish', but my Vet just said it is normal, dirt like, and I just need to wash her gently more often. Again, I think you should stop the anal glands and stop trimming her hair, just rinsh her privates under the sink with a gentle baby shampoo. Try changing her diet too, NO CORN and NO BY-PRODUCTS. Please keep us updated and I hope she gets better soon

wow... if you could SEEEEE the tears in my eyes after reading these responses. omg... to be able to talk to all of you that have yorkies as well. All of you know exactly how i am feeling and how hard it is when we experience problems with our yorkies. i worry so much about her and i try to understand that they are pets and pets are not made to be in our lives forever. i just hope that she can be with us, even if it's just for a little longer. i just want to find out whats wrong with her. i know she has trachea problems but it's this scooting problem making her stressed and uncomfortable. that brings on the panting and occassional trachea coughing sounds. She is so cute and playful, and mopey at times too... sleepy little dog that she is. :-) she does not look sick at all when none of this is going on. only when she is uncomfortable and she scoots, her eyes all watery. her allergies are real bad. These tiny little dogs have entered my heart so deep... and to find all of you on this website that experience the love and happiness that thes little angels give us all day long..... there is nothing to compare the love a yorkie gives you. not to any other dog. not a lab or german shepard. Yorkies "are" like children. they communicate with us... they love to be pampered and spoiled and talked to and trained and rewarded and cuddled with.. (gosh i could go on and on) I even work with a few girls that just can't relate to me. they think i am crazy when it comes to my girls... Gosh- i only have but 2 pictures of them on my desk. I try not to talk about them too much... but they really don't understand why sometimes i am trying to rush home after work to my girls, why sometimes my stomach is in knots all day because samie got me up 4 times during the night before panting heavy and making noise from her trachea. she does this when she is uncomfortable and only when we remove this tar like substane or if her anal glands need to be emptied. oh how i worry about her. my family and close friends all live in Ohio, so no one is able to come and check on them. and i just don't like to leave them alone for any longer than they are. I work from 8-5 and they are alone from 7am-6pm. they have their own room and they listen to music while i am gone all day. oh yeah- the girls i work with think i am crazy. someone i work that had a yorkie until this past New Years Eve (they had to have their dog put to sleep) so sad... but they used to leave on a tv and have dog movies play while they are gone. (hey- only us yorkie owners :-) My best friend does not even understand what i am going through with this. BUT ALL OF YOU DO!!!! and i am so LUCKY I found this site!!! you have no.... idea how much this means to me?!?!? I tried to post a picture tonight -but i guess i didn't do it right. i am working on that. i can't wait for you to see her cute little face! we are going to take her to a different vet!!! definitely. it's just hard because the new vet needs to know that we can't be there long. i get scared because last year we tried to change vets and it was a brand new place. what a nightmare! it was the vet and the receptionist working on her when things went wrong. i didn't know this was going to happen though. so the thought didn't cross my mind. had no idea samie would get so bad and have a hard time breathing. she gave something to relax samie and it made things way worse. like in slow motion. god it was awful so that's why i am so scared. i will stop here for now :-) i know i can get winded... and type a lot. sorry xoxoxo.... thanks so much for the responses! BIG HUGS TO ALL OF YOU!! sorry my posts are soooo long...

My girl has a mild case of CT too. I keep her belly and under arms shaved to keep her cool. I keep her weigh down as well. If she has an attack, I lift up her front arms towards the sky, this seems to keep alot. POne time she had a really bad one, it last all night, off and on...The next day I put her in the bath for a while, and I kept the door shut, the steam in the bathroom opened her up. The Vet says, if she has a bad one like that again and I can't stop it immediately, I have to bring her in for meds We are a family here, so nice of you to come on board Welcome
