| HELP!! Coco's ears! Help. Coco is getting like "leather ear" or "black ear"?? I been doing some research but not too many answers. I noticed a few months ago that the hair on her nose is gone on the bridge of her nose? Well, now I just noticed her ears look black and the hair is coming off them!!! Plus, the pink inside of her ears is getting dark???? I saw a yorkie once with two skinless black ears and it was horrible. I have to get her to vet ASAP this week. But any info/help would be much appreciated!!! Thanks!

| Hope This Help..i Have The Same Problem My yorkies ears are covered in black stuff, what can I do? The black coating is referred to as Leather Ear, or Winter Ear, and it is thought to be a fungus. What I have found useful in clearing it up is washing the ears daily with head and shoulders shampoo and letting it set on the ears for about 5 minutes, then rinsing if off. Within a few days the black can be peeled off the ear. Another remedy that is supposed to be good is to use alcohol to wipe the ear down and coat with Lotrimin 1%, doing this daily until the condition is gone |

| I Found This ALEX'S YORKIE CARE WEBSITE My dog has black slimy ears now and I was told this was winter ear. What can I do about it? Leather ear, slick ear, English ear, black ear does affect some toy dogs, namely Yorkies, rather seriously. It can be responsible for hair loss on the ears, hocks, and the end of the tail and leaves a slimy black substance in those places. Some people think it is a fungus and some think it is a "rabbit mite". Frankly, having spent hundreds of dollars in the 70's to cure it, I still can't tell you what it is but I can tell you how to keep from getting it or how to get rid of it once you've "got it". Leather Ear Normal Ears The dog on the left has black shading and no hair growing on the ear, and no hair on the bridge of nose, because of leather ear fungus. The other one doesn't. See the nice hair furnishings on the ears of the one that does not have the fungus and even it's nose isn't black on the bridge of the nose That's the way they're supposed to be. Watch out for the black fungus, slimy stuff -- It ruins the hair. At the first sign of black around the edges of the ear, wipe the ear with "dog-o-dontic pads" dipped in alcohol. Bathe in Betadine or Plexadine Shampoo, paying particular attention to the ears, end of tail, and hocks. Use Ear Guard by Gerard Pellham regularly in the ears and cover the ears, hocks, and end of tail with a thin coating of Lotrimin 1%....no other kind of Lotrimin...just Lotrimin 1%, every day until the problem is solved! You will notice the ear begin to get very dry. Stop using the Lotrimin 1% if the ears get too dry! Another product which I have recently used for this problem is #l All Systems Tea Tree Oil and I'm happy to say that it works! This stuff is also really good to spray on "wrappers" as it is not too tasty! Softer coated dogs never seem to have a problem with this but the silky coated dog with a lower skin temperature seems to have a problem when colder weather and high humidity prevail. Keep the dogs warmer and wash them at least once a week using Betadine or Iodine shampoo in those areas which are susceptible. You will be in control if you follow these instructions. It is also a good idea to have your veterinarian do a thyroid function test on dogs with these symptoms because some dogs with this problem also have a low thyroid function and medication may help the situation and keep the dog from becoming sterile and the bitch from having unusually small litters. |

| I just emailed this guy and he says this will work on leather ear. I haven't used it, so I can't say. But it's worth a try. http://cgi.ebay.com/MANGE-CURE-EARMI...QQcmdZViewItem or http://www.nustock.com/

| Hi! I had the same problem with Riley a couple of months ago. The bridge of her nose lost all its hair and her ears had lost a lot of hair and were black inside. I spoke with some people here on the forum and began treatment. I used 1% Lotrimin twice a day. First I would clean the insides of her ears, then coat front and back with the Lotrimin. I also would apply some on her nose. The very 2nd day, some of the black came off while I was rubbing her ears (along with a bit of hair). Very soon after, the hair started growing back on her nose. Slowly the ear hair is coming back, also. It'll just take awhile for them to be as furry as they once were. Riley's skin was never slimy, either. Just keep on the treatments! |

| I went to the vet today. He checked for mites and stuff and he thinks it is just an infection. He did scrape some and put it in a jar to grow with some orange stuff and that will tell if it is a fungus. He gave me an antiboitic to give her for 2 weeks. I am going to get that Lotrimin at Walmart and start that, too. Thanks for all the info. and help. Lori
