My little yorkie is sick. Help! I recently purchased a lil yorkie puppy at a petland store and he was only almost 9 weeks. Now he is a little over 10 weeks. On the way home in the car he started sneezing and it looked like a cold. The next morning right away I took him to the vet, it turns out he did have a cold and the vet had to keep him for inhalations and antibiotics and observation. He was there for 5 days. When I finally picked up my little baby he was so energetic and he was eating okay, not too much but was eating. After about 3-4 days he stopped eating. He is still running away from food, he turns his little head away from it, and he sleeps all the time. Seeing this I was scared he will become hypoglycemic so I took him to an animal hospital that same night. They checked his glucose level and it was fine, said he looks bubbly he might just be a picky eater. The next day he started vomiting from hunger, I started force feeding him with a syringe and took him to another vet. The vet said he looks fine outside, fine temperature, does not look sick. They gave him fluids under the skin and antiobiotic and another syrup for throwing up, and also canned food with sirynge to force feed. That was yesterday, and today we have been force feeding him every hour or so little by little with a formula mixture of baby food, syrup, and baby rice cereal that I read could work. Little Miko still does not want to touch the food and sleeps most of the time. Im not sure what could be wrong with him, he was such an energetic little guy. I even bought him a heating pad to keep him warm. Please if anyone is familiar with this kind of a case or has went through it please help, Im not sure what else I can do besides feeding him constantly so he doesnt go down. I appreciate any help that I can get so lil miko gets well. Thank You.

Are you giving him Nutrical as well? If he doesn't start eating soon, I would take him back to the vet if you are happy with the vet. If not, I'd find another vet. You just can't let it go on long with one that small. Good luck.

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | oh wow...I'm so sorry he's this sick...Petland is famous for selling sick puppies and I'm sorry you're going thru this ...did they run tests on him for Liver shunt ?? Coccidia & other Parasites ? I'm no expert but considering his young age - you should call the vet asap - The weekend is coming - do you have an emergency vet close by ??? time is pretty important here if he's gone this long not eating. Poor little guy - this seems to be happening so often lately ...there are some other threads about puppies with similar symptoms but I think you need to make a call and see if someone will see him right away |

Reply Yes I am giving him nutristat, at first he loved the stuff but now he doesnt even want to eat that. I was with him at the vet yesterday and the vet said he does not look sick, im not sure why they did not take tests, all he did was give him fluids. I am force feeding him every 2 hours I have no choice. Maybe I should go back to the vet tomorrow before new years and get him tested, what could he possibly have?

Put some Karo syhrup in his water. If you are force feeding, he might not be getting hungry enough to eat. Try giving him some cooked chicken, or scrambled eggs or cottage cheese. Ollie was a terrible picky eater at first. I went through 5 different brands of food before I found one she would eat. I've heard that Cesars is junk food for dogs, but most of them love it and IMHO any food is better than NO food.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I am so sorry about your baby. Cali was sick like that when I got her and spent many days in the er vet. She did have a mild liver shunt but that wasn't causing her problems never really did find out why she was so sick, but she wouldn't eat either but I finally gave her Cesar's and she ate it. So try that and good luck. I live in Gurnee and know of a couple good ER hospitals if you need them. One is 911 animal emergency in Skokie and the other is Animal Emergency in Grayslake. If there is anything I can do let me know.

when i got my little guy he was not eating at all, nor did he want nutrical. He spent 9 days int he care of the vet due to the fact that he came with giardia. Although my puppy was never healthy looking or acting normal it is worth having your puppy checked for this paraiste it can be nasty. i know that giardia can be very hard to test for, but it is an inexpensive test. I hope your baby is doing better. I also had to do the force feeding which made him really not like food so i went to chicken baby food and that seemed to help.

My little baby is still not feeling any better. I took him to the vet today they took xrays and blood sample to check the glucose level. The xrays looked fine he said he didnt see anything wrong, but he did have lower sugar level than usual 70 instead of a 100. I am continuing to force feed him every 2 hours or so with the prescription diet canned food they gave me, have to give nutrical every 4-6hours including at night. I am going out of my mind, cant stand to see Miko this way he hates the force feeding. The worst thing is he wont touch any kind of food, i tried cesars, chicken, a formula with baby food and karo syrup still nothing. And when he does not eat every 2 hours or so he throws up with bile, due to the empty stomach. He also sleeps almost the entire time. I read other posts with similar problems but I cant seem to understand why this is happening what caused this could it be stress? How long can this last, will he ever want to eat food himself? If anyone has any advice please help me.

Prayers for Miko I know how scary it is to not know what is wrong with your puppy. I am dealing with a pretty serious situation with my Abby. I find it a tiny bit less scary if you at least know a little about what to expect from a sick puppy or at least what other symptoms to look for. I would definitely do some research on yorkie sites about most common diseases and keep my eyes peeled for anything abnormal. A biggie for me was coccidia since Abby got it one week after we got her and I hear it can be pretty common. It sounds scary but it is treatable. I really hope it is nothing other than him being a little scared or stressed. Keeping him and you in my prayers.

I sometimes buy swanson organic chicken broth & warm it up, if he likes it you could add some to his food, also some strawberry yogurt. This has worked well for me. So they can get alittle bigger & eat those big bites of food. It takes alot of energy to eat some of those bigger bites. Royal Canine yorkie has the tiniest bites of food. They sell it at petsmart or about anywhere but petland. If you are trying to feed your pup the bag of food petland makes you buy they rather eat their own crap-that is your problem. Go buy Royal Canine Yorkie the tiniest bites. Let us know how its going.
