Default My 8 Month Old Yorkie's Leg Got Broken And I Am Devestated

I had a little Christmas gathering at my home Saturday for one of my employees and her 11 year old son (after I have told him many times not to) picked up my Willow and she was scared and squirmed and he dropped her on the floor and she broke her right back leg . . . the femer and the tibia . . . both were clean breaks.

I am sick. I am angry. I have cried since it happened. I knew her leg was broken right away cuz I saw it . . . and I just scooped her up and literally ran out the door leaving my guests there and drove her the two miles to the emergency vet where they confirmed it.

My poor puppy has a big pink cast on her leg and they said that she has to go to the regular vet tommorrow and probably be scheduled for surgery and have a plate put in.

I am so devestated that I can't even think straight. I have been crying every time I look at her. I know I have to pull it together . . . and I know that it is just a dog . . . but she is just a little tiny thing and I just want her to be better.

Will she be okay again? Will they put a plate in? Will they put pins in? How long can I expect for her to heal? Can you please give me some much needed help as to how I can help her?

Thank you.

You poor thing. That's every Yorkie owner's nightmare. It sounds like you're doing everything you possibly could. Good for you for getting her tended to immediately. Try not to worry. Vets are doing remarkable things these days.

I have no experience with breaks, but my 4-pound rescue had surgery to repair his cranial cruciate ligament. That's what holds the knee together, and his leg was literally hanging before the surgery. It is now held together with two wires. I can honestly say that he was 90 percent perfect within a month of getting his cast off. Four months later, you would never know he injured it.

These guys are so feisty that the hardest thing you'll have to do is keep her from moving too much. If round-the-clock care is possible for the first few days, consider it. If not, a crate or anything to keep her from moving too much. Your vet will know best.

Good luck, and keep your chin up. These guys are incredibly resilient.

I'm so sorry too !! That had to be so upsetting.....Is she in pain or is she ok now ??? that's the reason I'm strict about who holds my girls - accidents happen so quickly I don't look at mine as just dogs - they're my family just like my kids are and I'd be sick if one broke her leg just like you are...

Poor baby - hope she heals quickly...

Poor baby and poor YOU! I know you're just sick about this, but so much can be done now to help.

I just imagine your employee is almost as sick as you are.

Hope all goes well with the surgery. Keep us updated.

Thank you all for your concern and warm wishes for me and Willow. She slept straight through the night last night in my persian cat's "show shelter". I am keeping her as confined as possible so as not to injure the leg any more. It is casted and I have gotten the word already this morning that she will be going to the University of Minnesota for surgery. I am happy to hear of the remarkable things that can be done for these little creatures and feel a little better after reading your comments that she will do fine. It appears that my sweet little baby is much stronger than her momma.

Oh that is so sad but I am glad you are taking her to the University hospital. She will get great care and I will keep you and her in my prayers. I know it must be so stressful.

Thank you Patti. It is very stressful. She is probably doing much better than I think . . . but I am the one falling apart here. I feel so guilty for letting people in my home. I am her momma and I am supposed to protect her.

I'm so sorry that this happened I've had lots of company as well over the holidays, and I have to be on alert at all times that no one picks up my little Luna, she's a jumper as well.

Since you repeatedly asked the kid not to pick up your baby, perhaps his parents should be punishing him and helping with the vet expenses. I hate when kids don't listen, especially when it comes to a pet's safety, that just irks the hell outta me. If it were my child that did that, I would personally pay the vet bills and take it out of their allowance for the rest of their childhood!

I am so sorry to hear about your Willow.....I'm sure modern medicine will be able to fix her up. Just a shame that it had to happen. I'm always fussing about our little Toby not making up with people who visit......but now I'm sort of glad that he is like that. He runs and barks at anyone who comes in that he does not know so I always hold him in my arms when we have visitors or I put him out on the lanai. I hope your workmate helps with the vet bills.........she should!!!!

So sorry to hear this, so sad because we feel so helpless when they hurt themselves.

Don't beat yourself up. We'd all like to put these little guys in protective bubbles so nothing can hurt them, but doing so is not only impossible but would rob them of a real life. I can't count the number of times mine have been in situations just like your gathering. We can all learn from things like this, but accidents will always happen. Hang in there!

I am so sorry to hear about your poor little Willow. Please don't beat yourself up over this. Accidents happen even when we are being the best Mommy we can be.

It sounds like she is in great hands at the University Hospital and her little leg will heal, as will you. Sometimes we have to be insistent, to the point of neurotic, when it comes to rules with other people in our home's regarding our babies. I'm sure this 11 year old will not pick her up again.

Sissy sends big kisses to both you and Willow and tells her to be brave.
