| Diarrhea I'm scared! Bentley is 12 weeks old and I have had him 2 weeks. He had 2 episodes of diarrhea last night. Today his first time going, his poop was softer, but not diarrhea. It was also a lighter color, yellowish/greenish (sorry for the details). Then he had a solid, normal poop this afternoon. Just now, he had another episode of stinky diarrhea. I am worried. I'm not sure what to do or what is wrong. Any suggestions????? Liz |

| Did you just get him and have you taken him in to the vet for a puppy check?

| Have you changed his food at all recently? Has he gotten into anything he shouldn't have? Has he experienced any 'traumas' (a change in his routine or any kind of stress) - this can cause the bacteria levels in his intestines to get out of whack and cause the tummy upset. Oscar is just getting over a bout of diarrhea too (also had vomiting). You shouldn't let it go untreated for more than 48hours (I'd say 12 to 24 hours if they are really teeny). A trip to the vet to see what's up probably wouldn't hurt. My vet gave me some meds to get him back on track as well as some special food to help slow things down (so his food isn't just going right through him). Make sure he's drinking lots of water - it's important to keep him hydrated!

| sorry.. more... Sometimes the vet will recommend withholding food for 24hrs to let his system stabilize itself - I found this IMPOSSIBLE to do - they're too little, and Oscar was STARVING! Some people have recommend a little boiled chicken and white rice to settle their tummies or some cottage cheese is supposed to help firm up their stool a bit. However, if your dog has no appetite, then I would likely opt for a vet check-up.

| help I just got him 2 weeks ago and I haven't had a check up yet. Everything was going well so I didn't think I needed to. For the first week I had him I was home with him all day, had a vacation from work. I went back to work this week Tuesday and that day he had 5 accidents. I figured he felt deprived because he was at home and not used to that and was trying to get attention. I thought that the diarrhea may have been stress related. He hasn't gotton into anything at home that he wasn't supposed to have. In his last diarrhea episode there was alittle mucus-I think, but prior to that, no blood or anything unusual. Thank you for responding to my concerns, if you have any more suggestions I would love to hear them. Thanks again. Liz |

| Forgot Sorry, I forgot a few things- He did eat today, like normal. He eats Nutri Source, Chicken and Rice Formula, and Mighty Dog Roasted Chicken Dinner in Gravy. This is what he was eating with his breeder so I didn't change anything with his food. He doesn't drink a ton of water. I have it out for him always, however he's not interested. |

| With diarrhea the main concern is that they don't become dehydrated. Flavor his water with chicken broth and see if this helps him drink more. Also their electrolytes get out of balance and Pedialyte is really good for them to drink at these times. At 12 weeks I would think it is time for another vaccine, but do make sure he is 100% healthy before giving one. |

| When buying a new puppy, you should always take him/her to your own vet within a week of purchase - for your peace of mind and the well being of the puppy. Most breeders will have had the puppy checked by their own vet, and even though they are healthy will still recommend that you have him checked by your own vet. It was in my contract with my breeder to have Oscar checked within a week - it protects the breeder and protects you. The stress of being away from you suddenly for sure could have stressed the puppy out enough to cause an upset tummy - especially if they're still eating. I got Oscar on a Saturday morning and had two full days to spend with him before I had to go into work on monday -I chose to leave him at home with my bf that day because I didn't want to expose him to too many new things too soon (he goes to work with me everyday now though). That day, he didn't eat anything and had diarrhea when I got home. I definitely think it was from me being gone all day.

| Ziggy had the same problem when he was about the same age. The vet found carpet fiber in his poop....they'll put anything in their mouths at that age! As recommended on this forum, I gave him plain pumpkin and it worked like a charm..no more diarrhea. It might be a good idea just to have him checked by your vet and take a stool sample. Please keep us posted. |

| I agree with the others, you should take him to the vet asap. He could also have coccidia, which is what Simba had when I first got him, and even though it was very easy to treat you must take him to the vet for a general check-up. Bring a stool sample with you. I am actually surprised that your breeder didn't tell you that. Anita Last edited by AngeliFlad; 06-23-2006 at 03:56 PM. |

| I agree with the others. Definitely make an appointment to take him to the vet. It's just peace of mind and you will feel so much better after you know that he is 100% healthy or what is wrong with him. Diamond had coccidia when she was a puppy and that can cause diarreha. They usually give you an antibiotic for it and it works within 5 days to a week. Good Luck and let us know what happens.

| I agree with Stacy. And for what it's worth.. I require the new owner to make a vet appt before they even take the baby from my house, These babies can go down so quickly and when the stress of the changes gets added into the equation, a puppy can die in a few hours... Whatever your baby has probably came from the breeder and that is another reason to take them to the vet within 12-24 hours. Ya just gotta do it. Even the best breeders cannot predict what the stress of the changes will do to our babies... Keep us in the loop about her progress..... |
