| Hemroids?? Um ya, my husband brought to my attention that Ranger's bum was a bit red and he was licking it a lot. When I tried to investigate he wouldn't let me near his bum, but when he fell asleep I was a mean mommy and checked it out. To me it looked like hemroids or something to that effect. It's definitely red, puffy and swollen. Is there anything I can do for him until the vet can fit us in?? We've been keeping a strict eye on him making sure he's not licking the area, but is there a cream or anything that will help?? I feel so bad for the guy

| Yikes....I dont know if dogs can get hemorrhoids I have a maltese and as a pup when I brought him home, I noticed his lil butt was red and inflammed, but resolved on its own in a relatively short period of time.....I think he musta strained going potty. Is it just puffy and red or is it bulging and red? Hope thats all it is with your baby. |

| hey... it could be constipation or swelling from having had constipation. Romeo used to get that all the time until we (by vet advice) began giving him dabs of olive oil or a tiny pinch of Cat laxative. It reduced then completely ended the swelling because it ended the constipation causing the problems...you ight try it anyway. It can't help...and if nothing else it helps the coat look healthier...another alternative is to give your baby scrambeled eggs...it helps them go better and also helps the coat! :-) i hope this helps!!! ~Tru

| I have also heard this happens alot with hard poo and straining and that all the above helps. I have heard stories of animals that strained to hard that some of the inside tissue does come out!!!! The poor thing! I remember when Mojo was sick for several weeks w/ IV fluid, etc. the vet said to use plain old diaper rash cream on it. We didn't though because it wasn't bad, that was just the "if it gets sore and uncomfortable to him" suggestion. Good luck!

| oh... with the things I suggested you can just let your baby lick them off your finger. My vet said it was good for them! :-) ~Tru

| You might be describing anal glands. A dog has two in his anus. They can become impacted and infected. Generally, a dog with consistent bowel movements will excrete the "fluid" on his own. Some dogs need to have their's manually expressed. Some people do this on their own, but you can cause the sac to rupture if you do not know what you are doing or it is clogged. A groomer routinely does this and a vet will show you how to. Mine have never needed it so I have never done it, but many do it on a routine basis. |

| Hi -- I just finishing reading several articles that said that "cats and dogs do not have hemorrhoids." But there are other conditions that may be your dog's problem. Sometimes anal glands are the culprit - or a "prolapsed rectum" or even a "polyp." I think that polyps and rectal prolapses are not common - but certainly can happen. (Parasites are sometimes a cause also...) *** I also read that a change in diet for a while can often help a pup with rectal problems from straining, constipation, etc. They need less fiber - more moist food, and more water for a while. This causes their stools to soften and be less irritating. Also - moist wipes can give some relief. But - with all that this problem might be - I think if it's not going away - and your little dog is uncomfortable -- a trip to the vet is exactly what your pup needs. I'm sure your vet will know what's going on and exactly what to do for it. Carol Jean |

| Just read this post last night. Today I had to take Joey to the Vet. I was grooming him for tomorrow's Indiana meet-up and when I combed near his rear he would whine. I looked and saw an open wound to the right of his anus. He was swollen on both sides. I checked him on Wednesday and he was fine. His right anal gland burst. They gave him a shot of penicillan and anti-biotics twice a day. Told me also that a sit in warm water will help. He's doing just fine, eating, pooping the works. Vet said this can happen within a 24 hour period. Never had to express his anal glands before, but always check every other day when I brush and comb him just in case. So, my advice is to get to the Vet before they burst if indeed it's the same thing.

| Thanks everyone for your input. I didn't think dogs could get hemroids, but that's what it looked like to me and I didn't know what else to call it. When I called the vet they said they couldn't fit us in until late saturday but I called again this morning expressing my concern so they are squeezing us in this afternoon. I'll post back with results.

| Well they cleaned out the glads and the swelling has decreased by 75% so hopefully with antibiotics and cream he'll be good in no time. We're suposed to take him in a week or two to have a check up to make sure it's cleared up or they'll have to do further tests. Keeping my fingers crossed it heals quickly!! Thanks again for everyone's thoughts and input!!
