| Birdie has a concussion 10 weeks old We got Birdie a week and a half ago and she just turned 10 weeks old yesterday....Last night my husband and 12 year old daughter were hitting the wiffle ball and plastic bat and after my daughter swung the bat, Birdie ran up and got hit by the bat...it knocked her out and it was very difficult to get her to respond to us...we immediately took her into the ER vet where they monitored her over night and sent her home today. All day she has been very sleepy, confused looking and can barely walk and stumbles and shakes like she is cold (she did this often even before the injury). On her discharge papers it shows they gave her fentanyl so I am hoping she just still has that in her system....it's been a round night and a rough day watching her be so "off". She has a follow up appointment in a couple of days, we are just so worried about her. My daughter is distraught and my heart breaks thinking of how she is feeling...this puppy is her everything.... I guess I am just looking for advice/reassurance that our little Birdie is going through the "normal" process of an injury such as this...or any advice on how to keep her comfortable. |

| I would schedule the follow up for sooner if at all possible. That sounds very worrying to me.

| You need to get her in to see your regular vet as soon as possible. I know you’re worried about the head injury, but it’s also very concerning that she “stumbles and shakes like she’s cold” even before the injury. If she’s ten weeks old now, and you’ve had her a week and a half, she was sold to you at barely over eight weeks, which is much too young for a toy breed puppy to leave her mother. You didn’t mention her weight, but not being able to maintain her body temperature is very worrying. She could be having bouts of hypoglycemia. |

I also would not be letting her stumble around very far at all. Cushion her surface and contain her in a stairfree spot. Hopefully where she can be within eye and ear sight sound Let us know her progress Best of luck with your pup

| Thank you all for your concern! I should clarify, Birdie didn't stumble around before the accident...and she would shake more because she is very timid until she gets more comfortable with the situation. The day after I posted this she seemed to bounce right back to her old self...running, playing, snuggling and being a puppy. Thank goodness! We still have been trying to keep things slow and calm for her as much as we can though. We just got back from her follow up appointment and the vet said she looks great that she is a very good looking and healthy puppy. Thanks everyone! |
