| My Sweet Boy Rex - Luxating Patellas A doc visit on Monday confirmed my worst fears, his luxating patellas are grade 4. He rescued me on 3/18/14 and our first doc visiting revealed the problem. At the time, I didn't understand that I had options that would help minimize what we're going through now. How I wish I could turn back the clock. Today my sweet boy is sleeping in his bed and looks totally normal. When he tries to stand or walk though, it is evident that his little knees are out of place. He doesn't appear to be in pain but I know that can and will change quickly. At this stage, surgery is the only option. Given the severity, I don't think it's in his best interest to put him through that. He's about 8-9 now and has not been in a crate since we've been together. He would be in pain, miserable and confused. I wish there was another way but there isn't. I've made the heart-wrenching decision to monitor him until he shows visible signs of pain and then help him cross over peacefully. I'm dying inside at the thought of losing my baby but love him too much to inflict more pain on his little body.

| 8 or 9 is not very old for small dogs. I also don’t see LP as a reason to put a dog down. Mine had knee surgery at 8 and 9. Have you thought of consulting with an orthopedic specialist?

| Oh my.....please don't euthanize him for luxating patellas. They really are not as painful as one might think...unless maybe he has a torn CCL??? If he has some discomfort at times, you could give him an anti inflammatory such as Metacam or Rimadyl. Speak with your vet about that. This post made me so sad. I have older pups with luxating patellas...knees out..and they function Just fine. My surgeon does not recommend surgery on them once they are older because they are still at risk of tearing a ligament...and then they end up having to have two surgeries. Keep in mind that MOST yorkies have some degree of luxating patellas....I cannot imagine euthanizing them for it. I DO understand you don't want him to be in pain and/or suffering; but it if is indeed only LP, I seriously doubt he is suffering. I am sorry you are so upset with this diagnosis.

| Oh...and let me add this: It is not going to change quickly....matter of fact it may never change. Try to focus on today.... I think your pup is going to be fine!

| Update on Rex and Grade 4 Luxating Patellas The other partner in the practice called me late Wednesday evening and explained we had other options. Unfortunately, during the original consultation, it was presented as a surgical only situation. We've since seen the other doc and she's put him on pain and anti-imflammatory meds which have already helped reduce his pain and he's mobile again. We're waiting on blood tests to make sure his liver and kidneys can tolerate these meds long term. If that's the case, we can do physical therapy, acupuncture and/or laser to help him strengthen the muscles so he doesn't injure his back and hips. I'm so thankful this practice has both a surgeon and a doc that doesn't think cutting is the only answer. I'm hoping this 20 day trial on meds will have a significant impact on him and we can proceed to PT and whatever other methods are necessary to regain his quality of life. My main concern is his pain. I wish the little bugger was more cooperative about meds, he'll have supplements and meds to take for the rest of his life.
