| Giardia or Parvo causing illness Hello, I have a 13 week old little girl. We got her on June 3rd. A few days after we brought her home she started vomiting (2 times) and then started having diarrhea with lots of mucous (no fever). Took her to the vet ASAP and they gave her fluids and Cerenia. She bounced back ate happily that night and the next morning. Her stool came back positive for Giardia. Later the next day she started to turn down food again and had more diarrhea. Took her back to the vet and they did an x-ray to rule out an obstruction and her tummy was extremely swollen. I took her to the animal hospital right away and they asked about Parvovirus. I said she had just had her 2 round of vaccinations 5 days ago and I understood it would show a positive which they dismissed as not true. A little while later they come and tell she has Parvo and is being admitted for at least 3-4 days. They tell me their test knows the difference between vaccine virus and actual virus. Her blood sugar was really low but her CBC was fine. Only other issue on her labs were here electrolytes were off. Later the night I check in and she perked up after dextrose drip and was eating. She gets discharged the very next day. Now we are treating her for the giardia but we seem to have a really good day with normal stools followed by a day with a normal bowel movement and then lots and lots of mucous stool. Today it had a tinge of blood in it. Is it normal for Giardia to wax and wane even with Metronidazole being administered? On the days she has the mucous she is eating but not has happily as she does on the days when her stool is solid. I am just so confused as to whether or not she actually has parvo or if it is just the giardia sticking it to her. She is a little thing at 2lbs. Also worried about some other kind of issue like inflammatory bowel disease. The did do an ultra sound at the hospital as well and there was nothing of note on it besides the swollen belly. | Parvo would be lots of bloody stool and she would be a lot sicker. You could always get a second opinion. The smaller they are the higher the risk for dehydration. Are any of the breeders other pups sick?

| Thanks for your response. The two doctors at our primary vet do not think it is actually Parvo and believe it was a positive test because she just had the vaccination. I guess there is a debate amongst them as to whether or not that can happen (everything i read online says it can happen and the only place where I found an argument against it was the actual Idexx site for the snap test to test for Parvo). As far as I know all the other pups from the breeder are doing ok. I also didn't take her anywhere that should could have been exposed. I am just baffled by this good one day bad the next business. |

You need to question the breeder to find out when either or both of these illnesses have been at her location. When we were looking for a breeder one admitted to "having had parvo in her dogs about a year ago" but it was gone. After seeing my daughter's dog with parvo, I hung up and never called that breeder again. You should also trace all the places and exposures your pup may have had beyond the vet. Pet stores, pet parks, other animals, drinking water in streams, etc. If you have children or other animals, you need to really find out now to quarantine the pup and disinfect if the dog has giardia. People can get this. There is a human variant of parvo, but I have been told humans can't get dog parvo. Other animals can. You need to be very careful not to carry either of these viruses to other homes and facilities. My daughter's dog caught parvo from it being carried into her home on the shoes of a plumber whose dog had parvo. And giardia is contagious through feces and the handling of feces. So hand washing and yard/floor disinfectant is critical. So sorry to hear of your tiny pup's illness and wishing you the best in nursing her back to health. | |

| Thanks! The breeder actually told us about the giardia when we picked her up. She just had gotten the call from the vet and gave us the choice to leave here there for treatment or take and treat ourselves with her covering the expense for testing and medication. So we new about that it. I called her right away regarding the parvo and she was extremely upset since she was concerned about the other puppies and her own dogs but said she had never had parvo in the house before. I was actually impressed by her handling of the situation and her following up on her. I spoke with my vet again yesterday and they said to give her time to adjust and since she is still new to the home and recovering from a gastro issue. |

Yorkie Yakker | Hi, I just got a new puppy and she’s 11 weeks and 1.5 lbs. We’ve had her 4 days. Noticed she was not eating much on day 2. The next morning I woke up and she was completely out of it. I gave her some honey and Rushed her to the vet. When we got there, they checked her blood sugar which was 300 from the honey, and recommended a parco test. The test came back positive for parvo. It’s been 2 days since the test and we’ve been treating her at home with antibiotics, anti nausea and the hydration pack. My concern is whether she actually has parvo or not. She was vomiting (brown - looked like food) the first day we got her and we chalked it up to stress and motion sickness. She had a very long drive. She also has not had any diarrhea. Her issue seems to be being lethargic and we believe it’s likely from not eating. Breeder told us that none of the dogs from her litter have parvo. We brought her straight home and have never had a dog with parvo. She was vaccinated on the 18 of December and the breeder said the positive has to be incorrect and believes it’s due to the vaccine. The vet said absolutely not possible. I am so confused and stressed out!! I can’t find any info that says it’s a possibility for the test to come out positive due to a vaccine, in fact, I’ve only read the opposite. Sorry for the long post/vent session. Hope your baby is ok. |
