My poor baby girl was just diagnosed with a primary form of epilepsy and was placed on Levetiracetam (Keppra). I am devastated. She has been fairly healthy for 10 years and now she is hit with this horror. I am slowly researching my way around this disease, but would like to learn more. Do any of you, guys, have first hand experience with epilepsy that you can share?

I am also very unfamiliar with the drug she was prescribed by our neurologist. Today is our second day on the drug, and it is making her really drowsy at night. Is is expected? I would like to help her more holistically, maybe through acupuncture and herbal supplements, but unfortunately, I don't know where to find a competent and not overly commercial holistic veterinarian. Do any of you have suggestions? I am in Chicago. We used to have a very good person, which we'd used years ago, but this lady has gotten Alzheimer's and is no longer practicing.
I would really appreciate any recommendations re; medications, supplements, diet, and especially good holistic vets.

I have no advice for you but wanted to say that my Prayers are with your baby. Keep checking back here as I'm sure someone with some experience with this will post.

Thank you. I really hope somebody with more experience comes forward as I am slowly loosing my mind and constantly second-guessing myself.

You are doing the exact right thing here - you absolutely want to find a med that prevents seizures from occurring. Yes, they will make her drowsy at first - don't sweat it - just give her plenty of time to adjust and get used to having this med in her system. The key here is prevention of seizing.

I'm very sorry about your little girl. I see a veterinarian on Long Island who combines both western and eastern therapies. I have gone to him since he bought the practice 20 years ago. Over the years I've seen many dogs helped who have epilepsy. The Chinese herbs are sold at his practice, but many other veterinarians purchase herbs from his company. He may be able to recommend a veterinarian in your area. Through the years he mostly used conventional medicine on my Rainbow Bridge babies mostly because they were difficult to pill. However, I definitely have seen them work, and I trust my vet implicitly.

She has been on raw diet for many years (Primal, venison nuggets or pheasant). However, I've read that there might be a strong correlation between allergy and epilepsy. So, I was thinking that maybe too much protein is not good for her.

If she likes her food, I would not change it right now. I doubt there is any link btwn this brain disease and food.

Any update of the baby? My little girl, Ally, has begun to have seizures. The vet thinks it may be due to Comfortis (which I stopped immediately). He has asked me to let them know every time she has one. She just turned 8 years old on New Years Eve and weighs about 4 lbs. She is also pretty healthy. She just had her third one, which was not major, but it really frightens me and her! She is my baby! She knows it is coming and is desperate to be held, which is unlike her. She is a DIVA, but will run away if her sister and brother come near, whether they are playing or eating.

Are you feeding your baby a special diet? What tests did her doctor do to determine?
