| Menstrual Cycle Symptoms Hi all, My Lolita is in her 3rd week of her menstrual cycle. Her vaginal discharge has stopped, however, her vulva is still swollen. I was wondering if the following symtoms she showed today were normal. Last night she went to bed ok... She was playing with her toys, eating and running around the house. However, today she woke up with little energy not really wanting to eat. She wants to lay next to me all the time and she sometimes shivers as if she was in pain. I thought she was probably having cramps or mood swings but was not sure. I'll keep an eye on her tonight and will see how she wake's up tomorrow. Thanks to all in advance, Marcelo |

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | A dogs heat cycle can last up to 4 weeks and yes her vulva will remain swollen throughout. I have not really noticed or maybe just never paid much attention to the behavior of my girls when they were in heat so cant' say about the burst of energy thing. When was the first day of her heat and is there any chance that you could be wrong or that she may have been in contact with an intact male?

| At one time I had two unspayed girls, not used to breed, when they came into season I saw no change in them what so ever. They were still sweet little girls and did not fight with each other, however, not all dogs react the same way, this is just my experience with two unspayed females. I also marked my calendar when they came into season, then marked my calendar 6 months in advance to remind me to start checking them. Mine came into season like clock work, every 6 months. Their heat cycle was exactly 3 weeks.

| The heat cycle lasts a full 3 weeks or a little longer but the mood change and changes to her body will last approximately two months. Your girl could go through all the same feelings and changes that a female that has been bred would go through. This is why so many females experience false pregnancies. Your main concern should be that as your female gets older she is much more likely to get pyometra (an infection of the uterus). This is why it is highly recommended to spay a female if she is not going to be used for breeding. Pyometra usually can show up a few weeks after the heat cycle ends. Please read the following article so you will be aware of the signs of pyometra. Pyometra In Dogs | Causes, Symptoms & Treatment | VetsNow You best option would be to talk to your vet about when would be the best time to have her spayed. Hopefully she will get back to her old self soon.
